第1章

On the Fourth of July, my fiancé locked me inside his SUV during a highway traffic jam. It was 104 degrees outside. We were driving to meet Wes's parents when a pileup brought traffic to a standstill near a rest area. Jade, his childhood friend, occupied the passenger seat. She complained that she was thirsty and wanted an ice-cold Coke. Wes took our last bottle of water and went with her. When I said the back seat was unbearably hot, he switched off the engine, disabled the rear windows, and walked away with the key. The child-safety locks were engaged. "Jade gets overheated easily," he said. "Stay in there and think about why you're always so difficult." I had asthma. With the air-conditioning off, heat built inside the vehicle so quickly it felt as though I was breathing through a furnace. "Wes!" I screamed. "Open the door! I can't breathe!" I slammed my fists against the glass. My inhaler was missing from the glove compartment. My vision blurred. Outside, Jade pointed at me and laughed. "Look at her, Wes. She's putting on quite a performance." "Knock it off, Maya!" he shouted. "This isn't going to get you the front seat." Then he took Jade inside the rest stop for lunch. The last thing I saw was the sunlight burning across the dashboard. I died in that car. Half an hour later, I was hovering above it, staring down at my own motionless body. Wes and Jade returned with iced drinks. "She's still playing dead," Jade giggled. A truck driver approached, alarmed by my face. "Hey, man, your girlfriend doesn't look right. You need to open that car." "Mind your business," Wes snapped. "She's throwing a tantrum." "It's over a hundred degrees! She could die in there." "She won't. She does this whenever she wants attention." Wes pushed the trucker away. Other travelers started to gather. Jade assured them I was simply jealous of her. I tried to scream from where I floated above them. My voice made no sound. They were discussing whether I was spoiled while my body was already dead. Wes got a reflective windshield screen from the trunk and covered the glass, blocking anyone else's view. "Let's see how long she keeps this act up," he said. He had no idea there would never be another breath.

The heat inside the SUV climbed even higher. Blisters appeared on my skin. People passing the rest stop noticed the covered windows and stopped to stare. A group of older women walked over, worried someone might still be inside. Jade hurried to intercept them. "That's my future sister-in-law," she lied. "She's terribly jealous. Wes wouldn't let her sit in front, so she locked herself in the car and pretended to have an asthma attack." Wes backed her up. "I work hard to support her and all she does is demand things. Sometimes you have to set boundaries." Soon the concern turned to scolding. One man rapped on the window and told me to come out and apologize. There was no response. Of course there wasn't. A maintenance worker pushing a cleaning cart looked at the sealed car. She frowned and asked whether its air-conditioning was running. "She's fine," Wes said sharply. The woman didn't look convinced. The trucker who'd confronted him earlier kept watching from a distance. Wes smiled, encouraged by the small crowd agreeing with him. He didn't notice that every passing minute was making the scene less like a lovers' quarrel and more like a crime scene. I remembered the years I had spent paying for his business while he told his friends I was the one who couldn't manage money. I'd sold my late mother's house to help him start his company. I'd worked multiple jobs, postponed buying my own asthma medication, and eaten cheap meals so his business could survive. Now he was telling strangers I was a spoiled girlfriend who wanted expensive purses. I floated beside him as he basked in their sympathy. "You're lying," I whispered, though nobody heard. "I gave you everything."

The sun climbed. The temperature rose. A sharp crack appeared at the edge of one window where the glass had been stressed by heat. An awful smell escaped. Wes wrinkled his nose. "What the hell? Maya, did you seriously mess yourself in my new car?" Jade called the bystanders over, pointing and laughing about how far I would go to win an argument. I knew what they didn't. After death, the body loses control of its muscles. The smell was not a tantrum. It was evidence that I'd died. Two security officers arrived on a golf cart. "Why's that vehicle covered up?" the younger one asked. "Is somebody inside?" "My girlfriend's asleep," Wes replied quickly. "The AC is running. She's fine." The officer tried to look closer. Jade offered him a cold bottle of water and said I'd become furious if I was woken. After warning Wes to keep an eye on me, the officers moved along. Wes exhaled and pulled out his phone. "You know what? My family should see what I deal with." He started a live video in the family group chat, describing me as a woman who would go to any length to make him apologize. He uncovered part of the window to prove his point. "Look at her."
