第1章

The sixth time Ava broke up with me during an argument, I didn't come crawling back. I moved out, changed my contact information, and relocated to another city. Six months later, I opened the door to a private dining room and found her surrounded by our old friends. Ava smiled, as if she'd been expecting me all along. "So we're finally done with the silent treatment?" She reached for my hand. I stepped away. "It's been half a year, Noah. Are you seriously still mad?" I looked down at my wedding ring. "Sorry," I said. "I'm here to pick up my wife." Ava laughed. "You expect me to believe you got married in six months?" "Why wouldn't I? You always said if we didn't speak for three days, we were broken up. It's been six months." She stepped aside theatrically. "Fine. Which woman in this room is your wife? I'd love to meet her." Her friends burst out laughing. Mason, the younger coworker she'd spent our five-year relationship defending, stood at the center of the table. "Noah, man," he said, "you really came all the way here to get Ava back? You don't need to make up a wife." The others joined in. Everyone knew I'd spent years apologizing first after every fight. The sixth argument had been over Mason. Ava had given him access to the smart lock on our home, registering his face without asking me. She'd even changed the custom entry greeting from *Welcome home, Noah* to *Welcome to your new home, Mason.* She said Mason's lease had ended and he needed somewhere to stay for a few days. When I objected, she snapped, "Then we're done," and left with him. I later saw an Instagram Story showing the two of them at the other apartment Ava kept for herself. That night, for the first time in five years, I didn't follow her. Now she was acting as if all I'd done was take a longer-than-usual break. "I'm not here for a reconciliation," I told the room. "I am married." Ava's smile finally began to fade.

"Enough, Noah," Ava said. "A cheap ring doesn't make you married." Mason stepped closer, wearing his usual innocent smile. "I know you were upset about the door lock. I asked Ava to remove my access the next day. I didn't even stay at your place. You don't have to keep punishing her." "You never needed to apologize," Ava told him immediately. Then she turned to me. "We've been apart long enough. Let's stop making this a thing." She always decided how I was allowed to feel. She always decided when the argument was over. When Mason got drunk, she drove him home and told me not to be jealous. When he flirted with her at work, she said I was imagining it. When she took him away on what she'd called a business trip, she accused me of being controlling for asking why the photos showed only the two of them. Six arguments in five years. Every one of them about Mason. "I'm leaving," I said. Ava caught my wrist. "You want me to beg? Is that it?" "No. You can keep looking after the guy who shares your bed." Her expression changed. "What are you talking about?" Three months earlier I'd seen an anonymous forum post: *What do you do if you get drunk and accidentally wake up in your older coworker's bed? She's got a boyfriend, and now they're fighting about me.* The account included a selfie of Mason. There was only one older woman at work he called his mentor. I showed them the post. Ava's friends immediately claimed it had been a dare from a party game. "You took it seriously?" somebody laughed. Mason nodded rapidly. "A stupid joke, Noah. That's all." Ava looked at me as if the explanation should fix everything. But there were other posts: Ava staying up to talk him through insomnia, Ava picking him up during storms, Ava letting him sleep in her apartment. Hundreds of tiny choices that had left no room for me. I withdrew my hand. "Ava, this relationship ended six months ago."

"You seriously believed that stupid dare?" Ava asked. "The post wasn't the whole problem." Mason admitted he'd published it as a penalty for losing a game. One of Ava's friends confirmed it. They expected me to laugh in relief. Instead, I remembered the nights she answered Mason's calls while lying beside me. I remembered her rushing across town to pick him up while telling me to handle my own problems. I didn't need to prove they'd slept together. The boundaries I'd begged for had never existed. Ava tried to lead me back into the private room. "Come inside. We'll talk and go home together." I stepped away. "We're not going home together." "What else do you want me to say?" "Nothing. I don't need an apology anymore." Her face hardened. "Noah, you can't just erase five years." But I could. I'd spent six months learning how to breathe without waiting for her to choose me. I looked at the man beside her. "You can keep taking care of Mason. It's no longer my concern." "It's not like that," he said, eyes shining with carefully timed tears. "Then you shouldn't have anything to worry about." Ava's voice rose. "You think we're really over?" "We have been for half a year."
