My billionaire boyfriend had prosopagnosia. He was always mistaking me for my best friend. I asked him to buy me flowers. He gave them to her. I asked him to pick me up after work. He picked her up instead. Even at our engagement party, he took my best friend’s hand by mistake and kissed her passionately. Afterward, he was so sorry he wanted to tear out his own eyes and hand them to me as an apology. Every time, I felt sorry for him and forgave him. Until the tenth time we went to get our marriage license. He patted his pockets and groaned. “I forgot my ID again.” “Yesterday, I mistook Chloe for you and took her to Disneyland. My ID must be at her place. I’ll call her and ask her to bring it over.” I froze. The day before, a mugger had attacked me on my way home from work. I’d called Ethan seventy-eight times in an emergency. He hadn’t answered once. I still couldn’t reach him after I got out of the police station. Now, I grabbed his phone before he could call her. “Don’t bother.” If he’d never been able to recognize me, there was no point in getting married. Ethan frowned. When he saw my expression hadn’t changed, he relaxed. “Okay, then. I’ll go pick up your parents.” I pulled my hand back. “No need.” My parents had rushed over because they thought Ethan and I were already married. They were supposed to meet his parents and discuss the wedding. There was no point now. “Come on.” He put a finger to my lips. “Give me a chance to make a good impression on your parents. Go home and wait for me.” I tried to say something, but he was already in the car, starting the engine. He never seemed to hear a word I said. I went home. An hour later, the doorbell rang. When I opened the door, Ethan was handing the slippers I’d set out to the guests. I snatched them back. “Those are for my parents.” Ethan looked at me, confused. “Aren’t these your parents?” “They’re Chloe’s.” He paused, then gave me an innocent smile. “Look at me, mixing people up again.” I let out a cold laugh and pointed at Chloe. “You got the parents wrong. What about her?” Chloe tapped her forehead and pouted. “Sorry. I’m so scatterbrained.” “I thought you’d asked Ethan to bring my family over.” “Don’t blame him…” She’d always been scatterbrained. She spoke as if she’d suffered some terrible injustice. “We can wear shoe covers inside. It’s fine.” Ethan immediately called his assistant and told him to buy more slippers. After hanging up, he hurried to comfort Chloe’s family. “We’re all family. You shouldn’t have to wear shoe covers.” But when I’d prepared slippers for my parents, he’d said, “Why bother with all that? Just wear shoe covers.” It felt like something had lodged in my throat. I turned around and called a cab to the train station. My parents were sitting on the little stools they’d brought, looking around anxiously. They had bags piled at their feet. The moment they saw me, they stood up. Dad wiped the sweat from his forehead with a towel. Mom beamed. “Are Ethan’s parents waiting for us? We should hurry. We don’t want to keep them waiting.” They quickly straightened each other’s clothes and urged me to get moving. My nose stung. I took their bags. “No rush.” As soon as I said it, Ethan called. “Did you pick up your parents?” “There’s fifty bucks left on your family card. Take them somewhere to eat.” I hung up and removed him from the account. My parents gave me a light tap. “You’re getting married. Why are you acting like a kid again?” “Your father and I have never tried that little place. Take us there.” I looked at them. “I have money. You came all this way. Why would I take you somewhere cheap?” My phone rang several more times. I ignored it. By the time we got home that evening, laughter was coming from inside. I frowned. Ethan opened the door. He ignored my parents’ outstretched hands and stared straight at me. “Why are you back?” I took a deep breath. “This is my home. Why wouldn’t I be back?” “Why are they still here?” A paper airplane nearly poked me in the eye. It was Chloe’s little brother. “Get out, you bad person! This is my house!” The paper airplane landed at my feet. It was a receipt. It was dated that afternoon. Five people had spent ten thousand dollars at Bellavista.

Ethan’s face stiffened. He began explaining. “This is my fault. I mixed you up, so I took Chloe and her family out to dinner.” “You and Chloe are best friends. We’re all going to be family anyway.” Family. My parents must have sensed something was wrong. They smiled and waved it off. “It’s fine.” “Food is food.” “Ethan, we brought your dad a bottle of wine from back home. We also picked up some skincare products and other gifts at the mall.” Ethan showed no sign of guilt. “Just put them over there.” He didn’t even look at the gifts. Fury curled in my stomach. I pulled my parents away while they were still trying to smile. “Go home tomorrow.” “Take the gifts with you.” Mom held on to me, her eyes reddening. “What’s wrong, Lena? Are we embarrassing you?” Dad tried to explain too. “We really did buy those things at the mall.” “I know.” I held their rough hands in mine. “I’m the one who doesn’t want to get married. We’re going home.” Before they could answer, I rushed into the guest room. Chloe’s parents were trying on the clothes in there. “Who told you to wear my parents’ clothes?” Chloe ran over and burst into tears. “I’m sorry. I told them they could.” “I thought those clothes were for my parents.” She reached for my hand. “Lena, I really didn’t know. I’m sorry…” I yanked my hand away. She fell against the side of the bed. Ethan rushed in and pulled her into his arms. “Lena Hayes, how could you be so cruel?” He’d said my name correctly. It felt like a needle had gone through my heart. So he wasn’t face-blind after all. I didn’t argue. “I’m cruel and petty. The guest room was for my parents, and so were those clothes. You can leave now.” My parents tugged at me, but I ignored them. Chloe’s parents went pale. “Lena, don’t make my parents leave.” “They’re too old to sleep in a hotel.” Mom cut off Chloe’s sobs and tried to comfort her. “Chloe, you can stay in the guest room. Lena isn’t trying to kick you out.” “I just saw that the room next door looks nice, too.” Before Mom could finish, Chloe cut in. “That’s my brother’s room.” My parents both fell silent. Dad rubbed his hands together and gave an awkward laugh. “The room across the hall would be fine.” “That’s my room.” I stepped forward. Chloe shrank into Ethan’s arms. “Then where are my parents supposed to sleep?” I stared at Ethan. “The basement.” The moment he said it, I grabbed the clothes from the floor and threw them at him and Chloe. “Why should my parents sleep in the basement?” “They paid for half this house!” My parents grabbed me from behind. Ethan stood in front of Chloe. “Do you have to make everything a fight?” “Stop it, okay? They’ve stayed in basements before.”

A sharp snap sounded in my head. “Chloe’s parents have stayed in basements too. Why can’t they?” Chloe tried to drop to her knees, her whole body swaying. “My parents got sick from living in basements all these years. Ethan felt bad for them, so he gave them the guest room. If you really mind, Lena, we’ll leave right now.” Her parents started crying too. Ethan grabbed Chloe by the arm and shot me a cold look. “Lena, if you keep this up, there’s no reason for our parents to meet.” My parents tried to smooth things over. They pulled me back while smiling and nodding. “The basement is fine.” “It’s cool down there.” Mom lowered her voice. “Sweetheart, we still have to meet Ethan’s parents. We’re fine.” They held my hands and rubbed them gently. “Talk to Chloe when you and Ethan are alone.” My eyes burned. “But this is your home too.” “How can I let you sleep in the basement?” Ethan gave a quiet scoff. “You’re so dramatic.” “Look how understanding your parents are. They’re fine with it. Chloe’s fine with it. I’m fine with it. You’re the only one making a big deal out of everything.” Chloe smiled and lifted her eyebrows at me. My parents pulled me out of the room. “We’ll go check the basement. You get the bags.” I took a deep breath and told myself to get through one more night. After tonight, I’d never have to see them again. I looked around the living room, but the bags my parents had set down were gone. The housekeeper came over and pointed outside. “Sir said the things weren’t clean, so he told me to leave them outside.” My temples throbbed. I gritted my teeth and carried the bags down to the basement. There was a broken bed and a couch. I dragged a folding cot out of the corner. “Go to sleep. We’re going home tomorrow.” I thought I’d sleep through the night. A shrill, high-pitched noise rang out upstairs, followed by the sound of people jumping around. I tossed and turned, covering my ears. After a while, it went quiet. Then I heard arguing. I turned on the light. My parents were gone. My heart lurched. I ran upstairs. Sure enough, my parents were arguing with Chloe’s parents. “You can’t watch a game without cheering?” “If you can’t stand it, get out! How can you shamelessly keep staying in someone else’s home?” My parents went white. They stood frozen. “Sounds like you’re describing someone else.” As soon as the words left my mouth, Chloe’s father acted as if I’d struck a nerve. His face reddened, and he charged at my dad. It all happened too fast. Dad couldn’t brace himself. He stumbled backward, then suddenly lost his footing and tumbled down the stairs. “Dad!” I screamed and rushed to him. Blood covered his head. Ethan came out and saw what had happened. “Don’t panic. I’ll call 911.” He took one step toward us. Then Chloe screamed. “My dad has high blood pressure and high cholesterol. He can’t handle this! Help him!” Ethan immediately turned to call the family doctor. “No! My dad’s head is bleeding. We need to stop it!” I held my hand over Dad’s head. Blood kept seeping between my fingers. Ethan gave me a cold look. “Do you have to compete with her even when someone’s hurt?” I stared at him, stunned. I was about to answer when the ambulance arrived.
