"For eighteen years, I thought Adam would always be mine. But when Grace entered our lives, everything changed. He chose her, and my other childhood friends slowly chose her, too. They said there was ...

After the Alpha Trials ended, every single one of my childhood friends abandoned their plans to stay with their own Packs. One by one they changed their minds and decided to join the wolf patrol stationed along the northern border of the werewolf continent. ""Look, using alliances, treaties, and arranged pairings to climb the ladder—that's our parents' idea of fun. No political ambition is worth more than the five of us together," said Adam Richardson, my fated mate. He was the absolute center of our group. Tall, good-looking, stronger than any of us. My eyes lit up every time I looked at him. A spark flared in my chest, and without a second thought I wrote to Captain Marcus, who commanded the northern patrol, and told him I wanted to join. Even though I was the Alpha princess of the Silvercrest Pack. Even though my father had already been preparing me to inherit his position as Alpha. The day Captain Marcus wrote back, I ran to Adam and the others with my acceptance letter, buzzing. "Finally got that idiot Molly off our hands," Scott crowed. "If she doesn't go north, Grace will be the one who has to serve at the border." I stood outside the door, clutching my envelope, frozen. "Right. Grace failed the Trials, so she’d definitely be sent to the border. As long as Molly volunteers to go north, Grace won’t have to,” Grant said in a low voice. "Molly really is an idiot. She's been glued to us since we were kids, always running around like a tomboy. Does she really think she's some princess with a bunch of men at her feet?" Eric let out a sneer. Their words sent a shudder through me. I pushed the door open. Surprise flashed across every face. But Adam was as unruffled as ever. "Weren't you always telling us to be nicer to Grace? Now we're treating her like a princess. What are you crying for?" "Just go north on your own. We'll bring her up to visit you as soon as we can." I gave a bitter smile. Didn't they know? My early-admission application to Captain Marcus's program in the north had already been approved. And I'd signed a confidentiality agreement. They'd thrown me away for Grace. And I'd decided to give the rest of my life to the entire werewolf continent. From this moment on, nothing was going to stand in my way. ... "Molly, you didn't throw a fit. You really have grown up." Adam had clearly braced himself for tears and a tantrum, but I just stood there quietly. "If I threw a fit, would you come north with me on patrol?" My childhood friends frowned. Adam adjusted his glasses. "We did want to join the northern patrol originally. But Grace said she couldn't handle the weather up there. She begged us to stay with her." The others chimed in. "Molly, you've got Alpha blood. You've been climbing trees and hunting with us since we were kids. You're tough. Grace is too delicate. The Pack capital suits her better." "Then why did you lie to me?" Tears slid down my face. My inner wolf was howling. Adam said nothing, but something impatient moved behind his eyes. As though I shouldn't be questioning him. As though I should just stupidly go along with whatever he'd arranged, the way I always had. There are five Alpha families on our continent, each governing its own Pack. Our territories border one another and together form the werewolf continent. At the center of it all sits the capital. I was the only she-wolf among the children of the five Alpha families. The adults doted on me. My childhood friends protected me. When we played house, they used to fight over who got to be my brother. And Adam was always my groom. We grew up together in noise and laughter. It never once occurred to me that a day would come when we'd have nothing left to say. The silence settled again. "Grace's eighteenth birthday is in a few days. Don't make things difficult for her over this." Eric broke it first. He was a careless athlete; I'd scolded him more times than I could count for forgetting things. And yet he remembered another girl's birthday perfectly. I forced a smile. "I already have a gift ready. That designer bag she's always wanted." "I bought her that bag ages ago. Give her the moonstone necklace. That's what she wants now." Eric rubbed his nose, indifferent. Adam went still, then shook his head at him. The moonstone necklaces were what let our five families reach each other when the Mind Link didn't work. I closed my hand around the moonstone I'd worn since I was a child and shook my head. "Then give her the dolls." And this time, before I could react, Eric strode past me and scooped up the five dolls we'd made of ourselves. "Here. You can keep yours. She said she only wants the four of us." The little doll with two braids sat alone in the cabinet. I finally spoke up. "Eric, we made those when we were eight. I'm not giving them away." I went after him, but the others stepped into my path. "If you take those, we're done. I'll never speak to you again." Eric stopped. He didn't turn around. "Fine. Then we're done. Don't you say that every single time you're mad?" I tried to go after him again, and Adam caught my arm. "Don't, Molly. Be generous. You've had so much since you were born. Grace hasn't." "She's an orphan." "We just love her a little more. Don't be petty about it." Hadn't I already given her enough? She struggled in school, so I gave up my free time to tutor her. She'd never traveled, so I paid out of my own pocket and took her everywhere. She had no friends, so I even introduced her to my childhood friends. And in the end, I was the one they threw away. I turned to the boy I'd quietly loved for six years. "Love her a little more? And what about you, Adam? Did you lie to me because you have feelings for her?" "You accepted my confession because you knew I'd never do long distance, and that I'd absolutely follow you to the border. Didn't you?" "Molly, no. I've liked you for years. Grace is your best friend. I just didn't feel right leaving her alone." Adam pulled me into his arms. So he felt fine about me going north alone? I let out a slow breath, as if that could ease the ache in my chest. "I promise I'll visit you every month. All right?" Adam reached up to wipe my tears, and I turned my head away. His fingers froze. His brows drew together. "Molly, stop. Can't you be mature about this? Grace just needs looking after." See? Even when he was trying to comfort me, he couldn't go one sentence without bringing her up. "Grace and the others are waiting for me. We'll talk when you've calmed down." He glanced at his phone. "We're heading out now. You guys start with a few songs." Adam smiled as he sent a voice message to the group chat, then hurried off. I checked my phone on instinct. Nothing. The five of them had left me behind and made a new group. Meanwhile, there hadn't been a message in our six-person group chat in a very long time. I wiped my eyes and typed with shaking fingers. "Captain Marcus, I'll report to the northern research institute by the end of July."

Captain Marcus replied almost instantly. "Good. Come early to tomorrow's dinner and get your paperwork done." The next day I covered my swollen eyes with concealer and took a cab to the venue. Grace had uploaded a flood of new photos to her page. They'd gone to karaoke, then driven out to the river. The five of us, together forever! Wolves piled into the comments. [I'm so jealous. I want four handsome knights too.] [Grace actually beat Molly! There's just something about her.] I smirked and liked every single set of photos. The six-person group chat, dead for more than half a year, suddenly lit up with messages. [Grace was just talking nonsense. You didn't come. How is that our fault?] [Don't be mad. We didn't leave you out on purpose.] [Grace really wanted company. Don't take it out on her when you see her.] I pressed my lips together and shut off my phone. At school, I filled out all the forms quickly. Captain Marcus clapped me on the shoulder. "I assumed the only girl in an Alpha family would be spoiled rotten. And you're the only one willing to give up the capital and head north early." "I didn't expect it either." Out of the five of us, I was the first to leave. That night, Adam and the others arrived at the banquet hall. The she-wolves had gathered together. For the first time, I realized how popular Grace was. I moved closer and caught the conversation: "There's this girl who's such an attention hog. Guess who." "Molly, obviously. She's always hanging around Adam and that crowd. The whole school says she's going to pick a mate from among her childhood friends." "No wonder she's always so cold to us. Guess the rest of us aren't good enough for her." My lips tightened. I had never looked down on any of them. Adam and the others used to tell me they were all I needed. And after I met Grace, every time I tried to make other female friends, she'd get jealous and stop me. "You've got me. That's enough. Don't bother with them." I'd always thought that kind of possessiveness just proved how close we were. "That's just how Molly is. Try to understand her." Grace smiled gently and stepped in to stop the girls. "That's ridiculous. Why should we have to understand her?" "She's so shameless." The girls scoffed. "She's monopolized those Alphas since they were kids, acting like some fragile princess. Look at her muscles. What man would want that?" "Well, she won't get another shot at any of them now." I lifted my head. The sofa Adam and Eric were sitting on was right next to those girls. They had their heads down over their phones, as if they hadn't heard a word. I took a few breaths and walked straight over. "Monopolized them? When have I ever done that? Grace? Adam? Nothing to say?" The girls looked distinctly uncomfortable when they saw me. Grace hurried over and grabbed my arm. "Molly, people were just chatting." "Why do you have to take everything so seriously?" "Let go of me." I threw her hand off. "I treated you like my best friend, and you treat me like gossip? My life is your entertainment?" Grace stumbled back several steps and collided with a stack of wine crates. My childhood friends rushed over to catch her. "Molly, you haven't changed at all. Bad temper, no brain to match!" Adam gave me a look full of disappointment, swept Grace up, and carried her to the sofa. "If anything happens to her, don't blame us for forgetting everything we used to be and putting hands on you." That came from Grant. He used to be the brother I trusted most. Now he was so far in her corner he couldn't even tell when she was faking. The girls crowded around Grace to check on her. Grace's cheeks were flushed. She waved them off. "Don't cry, Molly. They aren't worth your tears," my wolf murmured deep in my mind.I swallowed the tears and turned to go, and the girls came after me and grabbed my hair. "You shove someone and think you can just walk away?" "Grace is too soft. We'll teach you the lesson for her." I fought them, and they forced me down onto the floor. Adam glanced over from across the room.

"Adam, you're not going to stop them?" I was pinned to the floor, humiliated. "You've got a temper. Maybe you need the lesson." Adam distractedly straightened Grace's dress. Eric and Grant scoffed. "Molly's been brawling with us since we were kids. What damage are a few girls going to do?" They yanked my hair and slapped me hard across the face several times. I hit the ground, my cheek burning. Seeing that Adam and the others barely glanced at me before turning back to Grace, the girls dragged me into the bathroom. "Poor thing. You're going north? It's freezing up there. Might as well get soaked here first." They dumped a basin of cold water over my head and locked me in a stall. "Sit in there and think about what you did. Let's see how long it takes Adam and the rest to remember you, you scheming bitch." They took my phone. I climbed onto the toilet and tried to go over the top of the stall. I crashed onto the floor on the way down. Pain tore through my ankle like the bone had split. Dragging my right leg, I pounded on the bathroom door. It rattled and didn't budge. It wasn't that I'd never been bullied before. But no one had ever dared do it in front of my childhood friends. While I was being dragged away, they were still holding Grace and comforting her. They didn't look at me once. I lowered my head and wrapped my arms around my knees. The graduation dinner began. Outside, the sounds of celebration came from another world entirely. "Did Molly go home?" A familiar voice, right outside the door. "I don't think so. I saw those girls drag her off." "Teaching her a lesson is fine, but they shouldn't overdo it. It's hard to explain to our parents." Adam kicked the door impatiently. I was about to send him a Mind Link. "Adam, how long are you planning to keep playing boyfriend with Molly?" I recognized the voice. Scott. He'd confessed to me when we were sixteen, and I'd turned him down because I already had feelings for someone else. "Two, three months? Once she's up north, I'll use the distance as an excuse and end it." I bit my lip and swallowed the cry for help. "I think of Molly as a little sister. I know I shouldn't have tricked her into going north alone." "She always looks at me like I'm the sun. She says I'm her fated mate. But I've never felt the bond." "If being her boyfriend for two or three months makes her happy, call it making it up to her." Scott gave a lazy laugh. "Brutal. You make it sound like you're serving her a last meal. Let me know when you two break up." "Why? Planning to go after her?" Adam sounded amused. "Don't you like Grace? Why do you care?" Scott punched his shoulder lightly. "Molly turned me down when I confessed. Why shouldn't I get some payback and have a little fun with her too?" ... Their voices faded. A storm seemed to tear through my chest. They left me locked in there all night. When I opened my eyes again, I was in a hospital bed. Adam sat beside me, holding my hand.
