I had always had the face of a good girl.
Only I knew how vicious my mouth could be.
When I was twelve, I got into an argument with someone online and insulted him so hard he cried.
During graduation season, I made plans to meet an online friend I had known for years.
My beautiful roommate, Chloe Evans, sneered when she heard about it.
“It’s 2024. You still believe in online romance? What if you meet him and he turns out to be some two-hundred-pound loser?”
Two days later, our whole class attended a public lecture given by a distinguished alumnus.
Onstage, the speaker was young, handsome, rich, and the youngest CEO of a major gaming company.
When he smiled and showed us the game interface, he accidentally revealed the friend with the highest intimacy level on his account.
It was my game name.
Chloe’s eyes were sharp. She gasped.
“Isn’t that your username? Don’t tell me he’s your online boyfriend.”
I tugged at the corner of my mouth.
Chloe’s eyes lit up.
“With your face? He’ll run the second he sees you. You might as well let me go in your place. Once I land him, I’ll give you two thousand dollars as a referral fee.”
After saying that, she logged into my game account on her phone and rushed backstage to find him.
I did not stop her.
Instead, I looked toward Adrian Vale, who stood onstage looking polished and elegant, and rolled my eyes.
Chloe had no idea that three minutes ago, Adrian and I had still been in-game, viciously insulting each other’s entire family trees.
Backstage was crowded.
I stood at the edge of the crowd with my backpack in my arms and watched Chloe push her way to the front.
She raised the phone logged into my account, “TiraMissU,” and held the screen toward Adrian.
Her voice was sweet enough to make my teeth ache, but it still could not hide her excitement.
“Adrian, it’s me!”
“I’m TiraMissU. I can’t believe I’m meeting you here!”
The moment Adrian saw the name, his whole body stopped.
The polite business smile on his face froze at the corners of his mouth.
The operations director behind him was still going over the next segment, but Adrian clearly did not hear a word.
He stared at Chloe for a few seconds.
Three seconds later, he suddenly walked straight toward her and stopped in front of her.
His throat moved slightly.
Then, in front of everyone, he let out a low laugh.
I stood in the crowd and saw everything clearly.
His eyes were bright in a way that almost looked frightening, as if he had truly stumbled upon the online girl he had been waiting to meet.
“So it was you.”
“I’ve heard a lot about you.”
His voice was calm and even, but the end of the sentence trembled with something almost impossible to notice.
The students around us exploded.
“That was Chloe?”
“Oh my God, Chloe is even good at games?”
“Campus beauty and tech CEO. What kind of dream pairing is this?”
“Chloe, don’t forget us when you’re rich and famous!”
Chloe stood in the center of attention, saying, “No, no, it’s nothing,” while the pride in her eyes was impossible to hide.
At that moment, Adrian’s gaze passed over the crowd and landed on me.
“You’re Stella Brooks?”
“I read today’s discussion materials. The top-ranked paper in your year was yours.”
“The one on ranking systems. Your data structure breakdown was excellent.”
He even smiled slightly and reached out his hand toward me.
I froze for a second and had not yet lifted my hand when Chloe’s expression changed.
She took one big step sideways and wedged herself between Adrian and me, blocking his hand.
“Oh, Adrian, don’t praise her!”
“She’s just a nerd who studies all day. She’s terrible at games. She can’t do anything except take exams.”
“And she’s so boring. You can hit her with three sticks and she still won’t say a word. Talking to her is exhausting.”
“Come on, Adrian, you’re so busy today. Let me introduce you to some of the people from our department.”
She dragged Adrian away without asking and turned back to glare at me.
Her eyes clearly said, Say one word and you’re dead.
I stepped back into the corner like an obedient girl and called after Adrian’s back, “Take care, Adrian.”
On the way back to the dorm, everyone was still surrounding Chloe.
“Chloe, you’re so lucky. You randomly meet someone online, and he turns out to be a CEO.”
I walked half a step behind them and lowered my head to open my phone.
A game notification popped up at the perfect time.
Your friend SouthWindKnows has come online.
I opened the chat, looked at his profile picture, and sneered.
TiraMissU: Adrian Vale, you looked so human today. That stiff smile made you look like expired Botox. My eyes hurt.
Sent.
Not far away, Adrian’s phone vibrated.
He looked down.
His face went dark at once.

I turned and slipped into the academic building, feeling wonderful.
I met Adrian in a game during my sophomore year.
That day, he personally came online to test a new dungeon, accidentally stole my boss, and then kicked me from the party.
I bought ninety-nine world-channel announcements and posted a bounty on him, swearing revenge for the stolen monster.
He replied with one line: If you’re bad, practice more.
From that day on, we cursed each other for three full years.
But no one knew.
Every time we finished fighting, I would send him a long review several hundred words long.
Drop rates were fake.
Mechanics were terrible.
The beginner guide was a complete disaster.
He always replied with only two words: brain dead.
But in the next patch, every single issue I brought up would be quietly fixed.
Even my casual complaint that “the respawn point is so far from the boss I want to uninstall” resulted in the point being moved three hundred meters closer.
So I reached one conclusion: deep down, this man looked down on me.
Three years passed. I was now a senior, and I never expected to meet him in person this way before graduation.
Chloe wore the name TiraMissU and waved it in front of Adrian for a whole week.
In the class group chat, people teased her every day, and she would occasionally post vague screenshots.
Chloe: Adrian said I’m the most special person he’s met in three years.
Chloe: He said my gaming skill is good, my mouth is sharp, and out of the whole server, he only respects me.
I looked at those screenshots with no expression.
The most special person?
That was true.
In three years, the person he cursed the hardest was me. I was also the only person stubborn enough to fight him for three whole years.
But I knew Adrian had never eaten a single meal with Chloe.
Every invitation from her had been blocked with, “I’ve been busy lately.”
Even the “private chats” she bragged about, I verified in-game myself.
That night, I logged in as usual to attack him verbally. Adrian responded immediately, his energy so intense I could almost feel it through the screen.
Later that night, Chloe came back to the dorm.
She threw her bag onto the bed, stared at me for a long time, then suddenly leaned closer.
“Stella, teach me how to play this game.”
“I’m playing with Adrian this week. If I’m too bad, he’ll figure it out.”
I leaned back in my chair.
“No.”
“You stole my account, went around as TiraMissU, and now you want me to help you maintain the lie?”
Chloe’s face changed.
“It’s just a few games. What’s the big deal? I’ll pay you for boosting.”
I immediately held up three fingers.
“Three thousand. No bargaining.”
Chloe gritted her teeth and stared at me for a long while. In the end, she transferred me three thousand dollars.
I instantly smiled and accepted the payment.
But Chloe did not leave.
She stood there watching me, the smile fading from her face.
“One more thing. I’m changing the game account password. From now on, I’ll manage it.”
“When I need you to play, I’ll send you the new password. When you’re done, log out.”
Her tone was light.
“I need the account in my hands to feel safe. What if you suddenly get itchy fingers and add Adrian as a friend?”
I lowered my head. My voice was flat.
“Fine.”
Chloe looked satisfied. When she reached the door, she turned back and added one more warning.
“Let me say this first.”
“If you dare tell anyone about the boosting, I’ll tell the whole department that you deliberately got close to Adrian and stole my boyfriend.”
“When that happens, let’s see who everyone believes—the pretty girl or the dull little nobody.”
I laughed once.
Boyfriend?
Adrian probably wanted to cut me down with a sword.
Still, I was not losing anything.
At least I had earned three thousand dollars.

During fall recruiting season, Adrian’s company came to our university for a campus presentation.
I submitted my résumé.
No other reason.
The offer was too good.
Among all the companies recruiting that season, Adrian’s company offered the best salary and benefits.
Besides, I wanted to go in and see what kind of monster this CEO who fought with me online every day really was.
If I could dig up some flaws and gossip, I would be doing society a favor.
The interviews went smoothly.
First round: technical.
Second round: project discussion.
When the interviewers asked how I won the ranking system optimization award, I broke down the whole solution step by step until all three interviewers kept nodding.
I used ability to speak for me.
Top of my major for four years. Three national competition gold medals. Every achievement in black and white.
I was confident.
The day I passed the interview, HR smiled and told me, “Your résumé is the cleanest and strongest one we’ve seen this year.”
Adrian did not even know I had joined his company.
My offer went through the most ordinary campus recruitment process. Step by step. All by merit.
Chloe’s offer, however, arrived even earlier than mine.
She announced it in the class group and invited everyone to celebrate.
Chloe: Adrian personally recruited me into the company! No written test, no interview. Straight into the design team!
Milk tea this afternoon for the whole class. Celebrating my offer!
The group chat exploded.
“Oh my God, special recruitment!”
“Adrian opened a back door for her?”
“Chloe is going straight to his side!”
“This is too sweet. What kind of CEO romance is this?”
Chloe posted a nine-photo grid. The last photo was a screenshot of her offer letter, the company stamp bright and official.
The comments were full of worship.
Only I knew something was wrong.
Chloe had failed three classes in four years and did not even know the basic format of a game design document.
Special recruitment?
I later heard the inside story through unofficial channels.
That special hire came directly from Adrian.
“Pull Chloe Evans’s résumé out separately.”
Because of the history behind the game account, Chloe did not even touch the written test. She just put on an employee badge.
I stared at the screenshot for a while, then calmly locked my phone.
During the first week of work, Chloe began behaving like the CEO’s future wife.
She demanded a desk by the window.
She ordered the most expensive afternoon tea.
Even interns picking up packages for her were criticized endlessly.
“This milk tea is thirty percent sugar? I said no sugar. Buy it again.”
“You can’t even photocopy a document straight? Didn’t your school teach formatting?”
Privately, the whole design department started calling her Princess Chloe.
On Friday, Chloe blocked me in the break room.
“Stella Brooks, be smart and resign on your own.”
“This is Adrian’s territory. It isn’t a place for some dull nobody like you.”
“If you stay here, nobody will be comfortable. With one word from me, Adrian can fire you.”
She lowered her voice. Her smile was elegant, but her eyes were full of threat.
“I suggest you think carefully. If you go against me, it won’t end well.”
I held my cup and took a slow sip of water.
“Ms. Evans, I have no interest in your little game. But you should think carefully too. I’m not afraid of burning everything down.”
Her face turned livid. She glared at me, then turned and left.
That afternoon, Chloe went straight to Adrian’s office and filed a complaint.
“Stella Brooks cheated in her interview, faked her résumé, and has serious character issues. Someone like her must be fired immediately!”
