I caught my husband cheating and asked for a divorce, but he beat me to the punch.
He turned the tables, painting me as the town's notorious, cheating monster. Whispers and pointed glares followed me everywhere I went.
Even my son, whom I had poured my heart and soul into raising, became his willing accomplice.
With a smirk, the boy mocked me. "Mom, without Dad, nobody would ever want you."
I let out a bitter laugh and slapped him across the face. If my life was going to be hell, they weren't getting out unscathed either.
I was walking my son to school just like any other morning, but a prickle of unease crawled over my skin. It felt like eyes were locked on me, though every time I glanced around, nothing seemed out of place.
Feeling unnerved, I looked down at my son.
"Leo, do I look weird today? Why does it feel like everyone is staring at me?"
The boy rolled his eyes and sneered, his high-pitched voice dripping with sarcasm.
"Mom, you’re so ugly. It’s no wonder people are laughing at you."
"..." I froze, staring down at the child I had raised with every ounce of my love. In that instant, he felt like a total stranger.
Hiding the sting of his words, I grabbed his arm, my tone stern.
"Leo Miller, talking to your own mother like that is completely unacceptable. Who taught you to speak to me that way?"
Leo jerked his arm away in annoyance. "I’m not lying! You’re so annoying."
He scoffed and stomped ahead.
This wasn't the first time he had spoken to me like this. Ever since I caught my husband, Tyler, cheating, asked for a divorce, and took up a job, my seven-year-old son had transformed into someone else entirely. He sided with Tyler, constantly putting me down, treating me like an enemy.
Whenever I tried to discipline him, he would storm off just like this.
He never used to be this way. He used to be too gentle to utter a single mean word. Now, cruelty rolled off his tongue with practiced ease.
Lost in bitter disappointment, a vulgar whistle shattered my thoughts.
A shirtless man with an obnoxious cartoon character tattooed across his chest swaggered toward me, wearing a greasy grin. Two of his flunkies trailed behind him.
"Well, well, look who it is. If it isn't our town's famous cheating freak. Out hunting for more men, huh?"
The tattooed thug raked his lewd gaze up and down my body.
"What do you think of me, babe? Am I your type?"
One of his lackeys snickered. "Damn, boss, you really got a strong stomach."
"What do you know? Just throw a towel over half her face. Lights out, they’re all the same anyway, hahahaha."
As he spoke, his filthy hand reached out, hovering mockingly right over the scar on my cheek.
Panic gripped me, and I stumbled back several steps.
"Stay back! You've got the wrong person. I don't know you." In all the years I had lived in this town, I had never crossed paths with such lowlife thugs.
I spun around to flee, but he lunged forward, closing the distance in two strides and grabbing my wrist tight.
"Where you running off to? You were wild enough in those text messages. What, playing hard to get now?"
What cheating? What text messages?
I stared at him in utter bewilderment, shaking my head violently.
"Let go of me! I don't know who you are! Let go, or I'm calling the cops!"
I cast a desperate, pleading look at the bystanders whispering on the sidewalk.
To my horror, the neighbors who had always been so warm and friendly averted their eyes, coldly looking away.
My eyes widened in disbelief. With no other choice, my final shred of hope landed on my son, who stood watching the scene unfold just a few yards away.
What broke me completely was seeing him turn around without a second glance and march into the school gates.
Panic, terror, heartbreak... a torrent of emotions choked my chest. My lungs seized. I couldn't breathe.
Darkness washed over my vision, and I collapsed onto the pavement, losing consciousness.

I woke up in a hospital room, just in time to see my mother-in-law, Martha, walk in holding a stack of billing slips.
Seeing my eyes open, she slammed the papers down onto my chest.
"Finally decided to wake up, have you? Squeezing money out of us over nothing! Abandoning your family, dragging our name through the mud—my son had the worst luck in the world the day he married you!"
"He moved all the way back to this backwater town just to make you happy, and not only are you not grateful, you go around sleeping with other men until the whole town knows! If I were you, I’d just crawl into a hole and die instead of dragging everyone else down with you!"
I frowned, pushing myself up. "Martha, what are you talking about? When did I ever cheat on him? Get your facts straight—the one having an affair is your son, Tyler!"
Martha’s face darkened. She whipped out her phone, swiped aggressively, and shoved the screen in my face.
"You shameless tramp! The chat logs have made the rounds everywhere, and you still have the nerve to blame my son?"
I took the phone, my blood turning to ice as I saw the screenshots circulating in a massive neighborhood group chat.
The screens displayed vulgar, explicit, and flirtatious exchanges between a man and a woman.
My profile picture. My name. Even photos of me that had been maliciously edited...
If it weren't my own identity stamped all over it, even I would have believed it was undeniable proof of an illicit affair.
I scrambled to explain. "Martha, this isn't me! I have no idea where this came from. The pictures are fake! People use Photoshop and deepfakes to frame people all the time!"
Between desperately looking for a job and adjusting to work, I had been completely blind to the smear campaign waged against me.
Thinking back to the icy stares from the locals this morning, the truth hit me with sickening clarity: these vile fabricated images had spread across the entire town, reaching all the way to my mother-in-law's remote country home.
Chills ran down my spine. I threw off the blanket, determined to head to the police station.
"Martha, my conscience is clear. Believe it or not, I haven't done a single thing against my morals."
At the precinct.
The officers tracked down several people who had forwarded the messages in the local chats. Every single one gave the exact same excuse: "I don't know who posted it first. I just saw it and forwarded it."
The final verdict was that because the messages had gone viral across countless groups, tracing the original source was impossible.
Watching those people smirk without a trace of remorse, I trembled with rage and insisted on pressing charges.
They were just as guilty as the person who started the lie!
"Whether it's a smear or not, you know the truth, lady. You sneaking around with other men and your husband divorcing you—your own son told mine all about it. Stop playing the victim,"
sneered one of the men who had shared the post, the father of one of Leo's classmates. He laughed right in my face when I mentioned suing.
The others joined in, chuckling along.
"Quiet down, all of you!" the officer barked, stepping between us.
My mind completely shut down. I felt utterly helpless.
Even after they signed their statements and strolled out, I remained frozen in place.
I suffered from severe PTSD and emotional trauma. Back during my first year in the entertainment industry, a car accident had left my face scarred, shattering the career I had fought so hard to build. I had spent years in therapy.
I thought I had stabilized; I hadn't had an episode in years.
Yet everything crashing down on me recently had completely overwhelmed my defenses.

Tyler and I were college classmates. After graduation, we landed jobs at the same media production company. I worked in front of the camera, while he handled behind-the-scenes production.
He chased me for five years, but I was entirely focused on my career with no room for romance, so I finally agreed to meet him to reject him once and for all.
Yet on my way to meet him, a speeding car barreled straight into me. By some miracle, the driver slammed the brakes at the last second, sparing my bones. People called me lucky to have survived.
But a deep, jagged scar was left across my right cheek.
The dream stage I had just barely touched was ripped away forever.
I spiraled into a deep depression. Tyler stayed by my side day in and day out, tending to my needs, nursing me, and gently pulling me back from the brink. I thought I would spend my entire life repaying that kindness.
Eventually, we married. To help me recover in peace, Tyler quit his job and brought me back to his quiet hometown. Life was slow and comfortable, and I became a stay-at-home wife.
I truly believed we would live happily ever after.
Half a month ago, I uncovered the truth: Tyler was having an affair with his female supervisor at his new firm. His rapid promotions were all thanks to her backing.
Armed with hotel receipts and proof, I confronted him.
Instead of feeling guilty, he flew into a rage, turning every accusation back onto me. He screamed that I was useless, that I couldn't advance his career, that I was nothing more than dead weight holding him back.
In a fit of fury, he hit me.
Heartbroken, I demanded a divorce, but he flatly refused.
I decided my only way out was to secure a stable job first, build a safety net, and then file the paperwork.
When he saw that I had landed a job and was leaving early and returning late, his belittling grew worse. He constantly tore me down, trying to break my spirit so I would quit. Poisoned by his father's words, our son grew increasingly hostile toward me.
The boy felt sorry for his father coming home to a cold dinner. He felt sorry that his father's shirts weren't freshly pressed. He blamed me for the messy house, convinced I had destroyed our happy family.
He never once considered that the peace and comfort he enjoyed had been built entirely on my silent labor.
All he saw was his father.
I dragged my exhausted body back home.
The moment the front door opened, I saw Leo bouncing around the sofa, dramatically mimicking the way I had passed out on the street that morning.
Tyler sat nearby, sipping whiskey and praising him. "Good job, buddy."
I had thought about it all the way home, and I was certain Tyler was the mastermind behind this smear campaign.
I took a seat across from him and got straight to the point. "Did you do this?"
Tyler twirled his glass, a smug smirk playing on his lips. "Do what? No idea what you're talking about."
"Tyler, do you really think this is funny? You're the one who cheated. Can't we just end this cleanly?"
He traced the rim of his glass, feigning innocence.
"I never asked you to make money. All you had to do was stay home, clean the house, and look after the kid. What was so bad about that life?"
"Give me a divorce," I said, staring directly into his eyes.
The man snapped. He hurled the glass violently onto the floor, shattering it into pieces. Lunging forward, he locked his hand around my throat, pinning me onto the dining table.
"Can you not understand plain English?! I'm never agreeing to a divorce! Don't you dare even think about it!"
"Mom, you're so hideous and completely useless. Without Dad, nobody would ever want you," Leo piped up coldly from the corner, watching us with dead eyes.
Feeling my body tremble violently from panic, Tyler eased his grip and retrieved my prescription pills from the cabinet, shoving them in front of me.
"Look at you. You can't even handle a little stress."
Back then, watching me suffer from panic attacks had kept him awake at night with worry. Now, my condition had become his favorite weapon against me.
I collapsed into the chair, my voice hollow and broken. "Why are you doing this?"
"I gave up everything for you. Shouldn't you spend the rest of your life repaying me?" He chuckled, his tone chillingly affectionate, as if whispering sweet nothings.
They retreated to their rooms, leaving me alone in the silent living room. Suddenly, my phone buzzed, cutting through the eerie quiet.
It was my new boss.
"Chloe, I received the medical note. Why didn't you mention your condition before? Your husband called in sick for you today after your episode. I planned to visit you after work, but things got hectic. Are you feeling any better?"
"I understand you're going through a lot at home right now, so I think it's best if you sort things out and focus on your health before worrying about work."
"...Okay."
Everything was slipping through my fingers. I couldn't comprehend how my life had unraveled into this nightmare.
I refused to accept this.
I sat in the dark the entire night, unable to swallow this fate. I had to get a divorce. I had to get out.
I would not let these malicious monsters crush me!
I was going to make Tyler pay for every single thing he did!
