When my adopted sister framed me for triggering her allergy for the ninth time, my three older brothers believed her. To teach me a lesson, they shoved me into a narrow, airtight root cellar. I banged desperately against the heavy cellar door, begging them to let me out. Julian, the cold and calculating CEO, wrapped a thick chain around the door handles and locked it tight. "You knew Maya was deathly allergic to shellfish, yet you deliberately fed it to her! Your childish pranks were bad enough, but now you're trying to take a life? Stay in there and think about what you've done!" Carter, a rising pop star, and Leo, a prodigy painter, sneered in disgust. "You're venomous to the core, and you still have the nerve to play the victim? Sit in the dark until you learn some remorse!" With that, they scooped up my trembling sister and rushed her to the hospital. Deep inside the cellar, the oxygen slowly ran out. Every breath burned like fire until my lungs gave out, and I died in the suffocating dark. Three days later, when they finally brought Maya home, they remembered me. Little did they know, I had already suffocated to death in that pitch-black hole. I suffocated to death in that cellar. When I opened my eyes again, my spirit was floating inside the dining room of our family estate. My three brothers were seated around the table, having lunch with Maya, who had just been discharged. Julian and Carter were busy cutting her steak and pouring her juice. "Thank God we got you to the ER in time," Julian breathed, his eyes soft with relief. "A few minutes later, and you might not have made it." Leo pushed a plate of tender roast toward her, his voice dripping with affection. "The doctor said you're still weak. You need to eat, Maya. Lots of protein." He placed the finest cuts of meat onto her plate. My usual chair had already been removed from the table. They chatted and laughed for over an hour, completely forgetting that I was still locked beneath the ground. Finally, the housekeeper couldn't help but step forward, wringing her hands nervously. "Mr. Vance, Miss Alyssa... she's been locked in the cellar for three days now. There hasn't been a sound from down there..." Julian's face hardened instantly. "Today is Maya's homecoming. Why are you bringing up that jinx?" The housekeeper opened her mouth to plead, but the icy glares from Carter and Leo shut her up. "That little brat made that seafood chowder on purpose, knowing damn well Maya couldn't touch it," Carter snarled. "And here I thought she was finally accepting Maya into this family," Leo scoffed. "Turns out it was all a premeditated attack!" Maya shrank back, putting on a frightened, timid expression. "Because of me, Alyssa got punished... She's been down there all alone for so long. Is she going to hate me when she comes out?" Julian's expression softened as he looked at her. "Don't be scared, Maya. We've spoiled her for too long and never disciplined her properly. Once she learns her lesson, she won't dare lay a finger on you again." He pulled out his phone, habitually refreshing his SnapChat chat with me. The last exchange was still from three days ago. Over those seventy-two hours, not a single text or missed call had come from my end. His anger flared up again. "Ungrateful brat. It's been three days, and she hasn't even sent a single text to check on Maya!" Maya gently laid her hand over Julian's, her voice thick with tears. "Please don't let Alyssa misunderstand... I just wanted to be her sister. I never wanted to take anything from her." Julian quickly set his phone aside, stroking Maya's head tenderly. "You're too kind, Maya. Unlike her. She's nothing but an ungrateful parasite." Carter thought of me, his eyes full of contempt. "Exactly. Trying to harm family just out of petty jealousy? She's rotten to the bone!" Leo nodded vigorously in agreement. "She stays in there until she falls to her knees and begs Maya for forgiveness. If she doesn't, I'll kick her out of this house myself!" I stood beside them as a ghost, listening to their harsh words, and found it bitterly funny. No matter what I did, no one could see or hear me. Our parents died when we were young, and my three brothers had dedicated their lives to raising me. One day, I mentioned that I was lonely and wished I had a sister my own age. So, my brothers went to an orphanage and adopted Maya for me. I poured my heart into welcoming her, treating her like blood. But in front of our brothers, she framed me again and again, driving a wedge between us until they looked at me with nothing but disgust. And this time was no different. They tossed me into the damp, narrow cellar without giving me a single chance to explain. I had struggled. I had pounded on the door until my knuckles bled, gasping for the dwindling air, begging them to spare me. Yet their faces remained cold as stone. "What are you screaming for? You brought this on yourself!" they had shouted through the wood. "If it weren't for you, Maya wouldn't be fighting for her life in the hospital! We've been far too soft on you, letting you bully her like this. Rot in there!" Carter had wrapped the iron chain around the latch himself, and Leo had dragged heavy wooden crates against the door, extinguishing my very last chance of survival. Now, looking at Maya's smug, tearful act, I let out a mocking laugh. Brothers, the sister who loved you more than life itself has already been killed by your own hands.

Maya tugged lightly at Julian's sleeve, pouting pitifully. "Julian, please don't be mad at her anymore. It's my fault for having such a useless body and being allergic to seafood. Alyssa couldn't have meant it. Please don't blame her..." Julian's expression darkened, an icy scowl settling over his features. "That little menace was pampered too much, which made her arrogant and vicious!" Carter's eyes practically burned with fury. "The older she gets, the nastier she becomes. If it weren't for her, you wouldn't have suffered like this!" Maya deliberately shifted her sleeves back, revealing her arms. There were still faint red rashes visible on her fair skin. Leo gently brushed his fingers over the fading marks, his heart aching for her. "Does it still hurt, Maya?" Maya lowered her head, her voice trembling as if she were holding back sobs. "It... it doesn't hurt. Not anymore..." Carter's temper flared completely out of control. "If we had arrived at the hospital a minute later, you could have gone into anaphylactic shock and died! And after three days, that little monster hasn't sent a single message of apology. She doesn't feel an ounce of remorse!" Julian stood up, slamming his hand against the mahogany table. "Drag her out here right now! I want her on her knees! Let's see how long her stubborn pride lasts!" Carter and Leo chimed in, venom dripping from their voices. "Her stubborn pride only exists because we used to pamper her! Now that she's crossed the line, she needs a real punishment!" They turned to glare at the trembling housekeepers and shouted, "What are you all standing around for? Drag that ungrateful brat up here! And bring the riding crop from the study. Since she made Maya suffer in the hospital for three days, it's time she learned some discipline!" Terrified of their rage, the staff hurried down the hallway toward the cellar. I let out a hopeless, bitter laugh. They didn't even bother to investigate the truth before condemning me. Three days ago, Maya had said she was craving soup. Wanting to repair our strained relationship, I volunteered to make it for her. She specifically handed me a sealed packet of seasoning, claiming it was her favorite blend. I tasted it—it was just ordinary seafood bouillon. How was I supposed to know it contained her deadly allergen? Julian was supposed to be a brilliant business mogul who saw through corporate sharks every day, yet he couldn't see through such cheap, high school theatrics. Was it really blindness, or was it just blatant favoritism? In my brothers' hearts, I would never measure up to Maya. A hollow chill spread through my spectral chest. Not that it mattered anymore. I was already dead in the dark. Now, they could pour every ounce of their love into Maya without me in the way. Minutes later, a housekeeper ran back into the dining room, gasping for breath and pale as a ghost. "Mr. Vance... we've been shouting Miss Alyssa's name for five minutes, but there's no answer! We pressed our ears against the door, and... and we can't hear any breathing at all!" Julian's brow furrowed tightly. He stood up, radiating cold disdain. "What kind of game is she playing now? Is she pretending to be dead because she's too proud to apologize to Maya?" "Does she even realize she almost committed manslaughter?!" Maya tugged at the corner of Julian's jacket, her voice dripping with sorrow. "Julian, it's okay... I'm just an adopted orphan. I don't deserve an apology from Alyssa anyway." Julian's fury reached a boiling point. "Playing the silent treatment to get our sympathy? Does she really think I'm that stupid?" "She thinks if she acts mute, I'll let her off the hook? It seems my punishment was far too light!" "Let's go. Drag her out. I'll make sure she kneels before Maya today, even if I have to break her legs to do it!"

Tethered by an unseen force, my spirit floated after my three furious brothers, my heart sinking lower with every step. Fuelled by righteous rage, they marched straight down to the basement where the cellar door stood barred. "Alyssa! Hiding in there quietly won't save you from your punishment!" Julian barked. Only heavy, suffocating silence answered him from the dark space beyond. Carter's face contorted with disgust. "Alyssa, cut the damn crap! Get out here right now and get on your knees!" "Don't think you can escape the consequences of trying to kill Maya just by turning off your phone and playing dead!" Leo's eyes flashed with pure venom. "You're really testing our patience, Alyssa. You can't stand seeing us treat Maya well, so you're giving us the cold shoulder to spite us?" "You think locking yourself in the cellar and throwing a tantrum is going to make us beg for your forgiveness?" Still, there was no sound. Not a shuffle. Not a breath. Julian turned his sharp, icy glare toward the trembling maids standing in the hallway. "Why are you shaking? Tell the truth. Did that little brat bribe you? Did you secretly let her out behind our backs?" Carter sneered. "With her rotten temper, she probably couldn't last an hour down there and begged the staff to let her out the second we drove off to the hospital." Leo looked deeply disgusted. "She almost killed our sister, and she doesn't even have the spine to face the music? Is this really the girl we raised?" "Does she honestly think she's our only sister?" The head housekeeper trembled violently, stammering, "M-Mr. Vance, we swear on our lives! Without your explicit orders, we wouldn't dare unlock the door! Miss Alyssa really has been locked inside for three whole days!" Julian stared at the utterly motionless cellar door, a sudden, inexplicable dread prickling at the back of his neck. He stepped forward and violently yanked at the handle, but the heavy door wouldn't budge. "Alyssa! Enough is enough! The chain is off, and you're still pulling the door shut from the inside, aren't you?" I looked at the warped, dented metal near the latch and offered a sad, ghostly smile. When the air had thinned to nothing, I had hurled my body against that door, throwing all my weight into it just to catch a sliver of oxygen, just trying to survive. The door had been bolted from the outside with heavy crates piled against it; my frantic hits had only warped the hinges, sealing it even tighter. I had died choking on my own screams. Brothers, when you finally see what's left of me, will you spare me even a tiny shred of pity? Will you bury me next to Mom and Dad? Julian's frustration boiled over. Losing his patience, he kicked the heavy wooden door with all his might. Crack. The warped door splintered, opening a narrow gap. A wave of sickening, nauseating stench billowed out into the hallway. One of the maids gasped, clapping a hand over her mouth, her voice quivering with terror. "That... that smells like a corpse!" Carter and Leo stormed forward, scowling. "What corpse? She probably snuck out days ago and tossed a dead rat inside to freak us out!" "Alyssa, do you really take us for fools?!" Losing their tempers entirely, all three men kicked the door together. BAM! With a deafening crash, the heavy door flew open. A foul, overwhelming stench of advanced decomposition flooded the corridor, exposing the dark, narrow confines of the cellar to the bright light above.
