After my stepmother died, I found her thick ledger.
Every single expense she had spent on me over the years was documented inside, down to the exact cost of a toothbrush.
Countless times, she had slammed that very notebook violently against my body.
"Once you turn eighteen, you will pay me back every single penny!"
Yet she died just one month shy of my eighteenth birthday.
With dark vindication, I flipped open the pages.
Until I reached the very last one.
Tucked hidden within the binding, two jagged words were scrawled.
"Run now!"
My hand holding the page trembled, a sickening chill shooting straight up my spine.
Instinctively, I read those two words again.
Before I could even process them, the door behind me swung open.
"Zoe, there you are."
Keeping my composure, I casually flipped back several pages. Ethan slid his arms around my waist from behind with practiced familiarity.
I pointed at the ledger. "I guess this counts as her personal effect too. Should we burn it?"
According to local custom, all personal belongings of the deceased were meant to be burned.
I had used the excuse of helping clear out her room just to hunt down this ledger.
Ethan idly flipped through the pages.
For some reason, my chest tightened with an inexplicable rush of nerves.
He pressed a gentle kiss to my earlobe. "Zoe, everything in here is about you. You decide. If looking at it makes you unhappy, we’ll just throw it into the fire with the rest."
I closed the ledger and turned in his embrace, wrapping my arms around his waist.
My voice was muffled against his chest, carrying a faint, subtle lightness.
"Then I’ll keep it. It has the traces of me growing up."
I let out a soft sneer. "A blessing in disguise, I guess."
A large hand rested gently on the crown of my head, his warm, doting voice murmuring by my ear.
His warm breath sent an involuntary shiver through me.
"Alright. Whatever Zoe wants."
I tightened my grip around Ethan, comfortably burying my face against his warm chest.
The only obstacle standing between my love for Ethan was gone. Finally, I could be with him without any reservations.
Those two frantic words flashed across my mind, but on some strange whim, I didn't mention them to him.
In my heart, I was certain it was just my stepmother's final, desperate attempt to drive a wedge between Ethan and me.
She could never stomach the idea of her precious son being with me.
Even in death, she had schemed to make me leave him of my own accord.
I rarely dreamed.
Despite my relentlessly packed schedule, for seventeen years, no matter how exhausted I was, I could always sleep straight through the night without a single dream, waking up the next day to rush between endless private classes.
Perhaps her death had been too sudden, keeping my brain trapped in a state of wired hyperarousal.
Or perhaps that ledger, finally laid bare before me, had cut too deeply.
I dreamed of winter break when I was sixteen. Outside the window, thick snowflakes danced heavily through the air. My tutor had let me off early, granting me a rare moment to catch my breath.
Shouldering my violin case, I had pushed the front door open with light, cheerful steps.
My father wasn't home at that hour, and my stepmother would be lounging lazily in her bedroom as usual.
I had to seize this rare window of opportunity to be alone with Ethan.
From a distance, I spotted him lying on the recliner by the floor-to-ceiling window. I crept closer, reaching out to cover his eyes, only to find them softly shut, his breathing steady and gentle.
Everything around us fell into a profound stillness. With every rhythm of his breath, my heart pounded faster and faster.
By the time I came to my senses, our faces were mere inches apart.
The deep, torrential love buried inside me surged uncontrollably. Throwing caution to the wind, I closed my eyes and leaned in to kiss him.
"Ah! What the hell are you doing?!"
The moment that shrill, grating voice pierced the silence, a heavy object cut through the air and slammed brutally against my legs.
Wincing through the pain, I jerked upright, pressing my lips into a tight line to mask the panic in my eyes as I glared at my stepmother.
My voice sounded strained, parched with anxiety. "I... I just came to check on Ethan."
I bent down to pick up the heavy object—that detestable, maddening ledger.
My footsteps were frantic, desperate to toss it onto the coffee table and make a run for it.
I never expected that after only two steps, she would completely lose her mind, lunging forward to yank my hair, slapping me violently across the face twice.
"You little tramp! Filthy whore! Slut! You're just like your mother! What were you trying to do to my son?!"

In the past, our clashes had been confined to sharp tongue-lashings and sneering glares.
That was the first time she had ever laid a hand on me.
I stood frozen for a second before an overwhelming wave of humiliation and fury engulfed me.
She was nothing but an opportunistic parlor girl who had dragged her baggage into our household halfway through my life. If my own mother hadn't passed away, she never would have been worthy of stepping foot through our front door.
What right did she have to walk all over me?
So what if my father spoiled her rotten because she was his first love? So what if I had feelings for her son?!
With years of old resentment piling onto new hatred, I hurled the ledger to the floor and lunged into a violent scuffle with her.
"None of your damn business what I do! What right do you have to track every dime I spend?! Everything you eat, wear, and use comes straight from my father! You're just a useless trophy wife trapped in this house, so who are you to demand I pay you back?! I'm spending my own father's money, it has nothing to do with you!"
She was older, after all, and with a few desperate shoves, I pinned her against the wall. Her eyes were dripping with venom.
"You're the spawn of a homewrecker! You owe me!"
It was almost laughable. She had always firmly believed that whichever woman went unloved was the true mistress, convincing herself that my mother's arranged marriage to my father had destroyed her precious romance with him. That was why she spent every single day neurotically tracking my expenses, demanding I pay her back once I turned eighteen.
She was like an unhinged lunatic, so pathologically obsessed with my father that she took every ounce of it out on me.
Brainwashed and relentlessly pressured by her day in and day out, I had scrimped and saved every penny behind everyone's back, fueled entirely by the burning desire to take stacks of cold, hard cash on my eighteenth birthday and slap them right across her face.
I wanted to mock her, to tell her she was nothing more than a pathetic parasite who couldn't survive without a man, utterly inferior to my mother, and even more inferior to me.
I raised my hand, fully prepared to return the slap, when a drowsy, raspy voice behind me froze me in my tracks.
"Zoe? You're back? ...Mom? What are you two doing?"
My hand snapped back instantly.
When pushed to the brink, I could scream my lungs out at her, and when Ethan came to comfort me, I could complain endlessly about how cruel she was.
He would always listen to me vent, carving out a little pocket of sanctuary for me, occasionally shielding me from her blatant malice.
Yet I never dared to strike his mother in front of him. I was terrified of crossing his boundaries, terrified that he would come to loathe me.
If the only person in this family who actually cared about me abandoned me, I had no idea what I would do.
Lowering my head, all my fiery rage fizzled out in an instant.
Cautiously, I stole a glance at his face.
In the next second, I jolted awake from the dream.
I didn't open my eyes. The surroundings were dead silent—no early morning birds, no piercing sunlight filtering through my eyelids.
Only the rhythmic ticking of the clock and the steady sound of my own breathing.
Ethan wasn't in the room.
Having shared a bed with him for nearly a month, I knew he was an exceptionally light sleeper.
Seeing how exhausted he would get, I had once tried turning off the alarm and slipping out of bed without making a sound, yet he would always open his eyes the moment I shifted.
So why... why had he only conveniently woken up that day just as I was about to hit his mother?

My mind was tangled in a chaotic knot. The jagged words in the binding and the scene from my dream flashed back and forth, driving me to desperately recall Ethan's exact expression from that moment.
The bedroom doorknob gave a quiet, mechanical click, and the scattered pieces in my head suddenly locked into place.
I remembered.
It was a flash of bone-chilling coldness—a gaze that looked upon an inanimate corpse.
Yet the moment his eyes caught mine, they had softened into a gentle curve, smiling with tender indulgence.
"Zoe."
The voice from my memory merged seamlessly with the voice entering the room.
Ethan shut the door and walked closer, the scent of sandalwood mingling with his signature trace of menthol tobacco.
Normally, I would have thrown myself straight into his arms to inhale his scent.
Right now, however, I remained frozen in my sleeping posture, my thoughts racing at breakneck speed.
What had he been doing in my father's home office in the dead of night?
And why was he whispering my name while I was fast asleep?
I waited quietly for his next move.
The mattress beside me sank down.
Propping himself up on one arm, Ethan leaned over me, using his free hand to gently sweep a stray lock of hair from my cheek.
Soft, warm lips brushed against my forehead, lingering for only a fraction of a second.
In a tone both devout and dangerously intoxicating, he murmured into my ear: "Zoe loves Ethan very much."
I forced my heart to maintain a steady rhythm.
Was all of this bizarre midnight behavior just his twisted way of confirming my feelings for him?
I never imagined that my effortlessly composed, all-powerful older brother was actually this deeply insecure.
Like a possessive yandere who couldn't survive without me.
If my stepmother's warning to "run now" was merely referring to his obsessive side, then what did I have to fear?
A flutter of secret delight washed over me, tempting me to suddenly snap my eyes open and catch him off guard.
Yet his voice continued, low and hypnotic: "Zoe will do anything for Ethan."
It was true, yes, but hearing it coaxed out of Ethan's mouth carried a sinister, insidious edge.
The ticking of the wall clock grew deafeningly sharp, every passing second underscored by his relentlessly looped whispers.
It sounded entirely like hypnosis.
A sudden wave of dread snaked up from the soles of my feet along my spine, making the fine hairs on my body stand on end.
Just as my heart threatened to hammer uncontrollably, I rolled over, curling into a tight ball.
Letting out a faint, sleepy mumble, I slurred, "Ethan..."
Ethan froze for an imperceptible fraction of a second. Then, his fingers gently trailed down the length of my hair.
Stroking it rhythmically, he continued to whisper those exact two sentences into my ear over and over again.
When I opened my eyes again, bright daylight flooded the room.
Against all odds, amidst that suffocating tension, I had actually managed to fall asleep until now.
Ethan was propping his head on one hand, a faint smile playing on his lips as he gazed down at me.
"Morning, little Zoe."
As was his routine, Ethan planted a soft kiss on my forehead.
"Have you been too worn out lately? You slept all the way until nine."
He ruffled my hair affectionately.
He looked completely different from the brooding, obsessive specter from last night.
Suppressing the sickening unease in my chest, I fought back a violent shiver and scrambled out of bed in a flurry of panic. "Oh no! I have piano class today!"
"Why didn't you wake me up?!"
Anyone subjected to a whole night of eerie, hypnotic chanting would end up on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
Let alone when it came from the otherwise gentle, immaculate Ethan.
Ethan let out a low chuckle, getting to his feet and heading toward the door. As he pulled it open, he flashed me a playful wink.
"Don't worry. Mr. Miller is away on a business trip. I called your instructor on the sly and let them know you'd be a little late."
"Get freshened up and come down for breakfast. I made your favorite shrimp dumplings."
The door latched shut quietly. It seemed my act last night had been convincing enough.
Grabbing a change of clothes, I headed toward the bathroom. My gaze casually swept past the base of the television, where I knew a pinhole camera sat disguised as an idle standby light.
I used to suspect my stepmother had secretly planted it there to spy on me.
Now, I wasn't so sure anymore.

By the time I reached the music studio, the other students had already wrapped up the first session and were taking a break.
Seeing me arrive so late, Brandon shoved a chunk of mango into his mouth and frantically waved me over.
I walked up, pinched a piece of fruit for myself, and chewed. "What's up?"
Looking around like a petty thief, he pulled me down to his level. "So? Now that your wicked stepmother kicked the bucket, have you and Ethan finally... you know?"
He hooked his thumbs together, wiggling his eyebrows with a sleazy smirk. "Set the sheets on fire?"
"Cough! Cough, cough!"
The mango juice caught in my windpipe, the pulp sticking in my throat and nearly choking the life out of me.
I shot him a dirty glare, snatching the carton of milk he held out to wash it down.
"Can you keep your filthy mind out of the gutter for once? She hasn't even been dead for three days. Do you really think Ethan would do something like that? And for the record, I'm not that desperate."
Brandon rolled his eyes with utter disdain. "Oh please. Who's the one constantly whining to me, 'Wah, why won't Ethan kiss me on the lips? Wah, does Ethan not really love me?'"
"Get lost."
I kicked his shin.
Squeezing onto the bench beside him, I lowered my voice. "Look, I know for sure now that Ethan really does love me. Sure, some things are a little weird, but his feelings are definitely genuine."
"Weird how?"
I pursed my lips. Before I figured out the full picture, it was better not to blab about it so carelessly; at the end of the day, Brandon was an outsider.
"Never mind. Tell you later."
Brandon threw his hands up in annoyance. "I don't know why I even bother asking."
We sat wedged side by side behind the grand piano, one silently sipping milk while the other furiously stuffed his face.
As the milk carton emptied, a sudden bolt of inspiration struck me. I jabbed Brandon with my elbow.
"Is there anything out there that can induce deep sleep while simultaneously enabling subconscious hypnotic suggestion?"
Brandon's eyes blew wide with horror. "Are you finally resorting to drugging him for non-con romance?!"
"Just answer the damn question. Does it exist or not?"
"There's this substance... Scopolamine, often called Devil's Breath. One of its compounds can pull that off. But don't you dare drag me into doing anything illegal."
"Relax. I just need you to run a lab test on a liquid sample for me. I'll bring it tomorrow."
I was jumping at shadows now. Whether it was pure paranoia or if my stepmother's final words had truly gotten into my head, I had to take the initiative and investigate.
Between the disturbing dream and waking up in the middle of the night, the only variable had been the glass of warm milk that I had secretly dumped out halfway.
That night, when Ethan handed me the glass of warm milk, I held back a mouthful.
Slipping into the bathroom, I spat it cleanly into a fresh cosmetic cushion compact.
The next day, when I pulled the saturated cushion out of the compact and squeezed the droplets out for Brandon, his jaw dropped.
He gave me a bewildered thumbs-up. "Zoe Miller, I swear I understand you less and less every day."
The lab results came back remarkably fast.
When Brandon called me, I was sitting by the lake, working on an open-air landscape sketch.
"Zoe... where the hell did you get this stuff?"
