Introduction:
Seven years of devotion ended in a very public betrayal.
Her fiancé cheated on her with an up-and-coming actress. Not only did he force her to call off their engagement, but he also exposed her inability to have children to the world.
Back at the Bennett family home, she was used as a bargaining chip once again, pressured to marry a notoriously violent and ill-tempered heir in San Francisco who had a disability affecting both legs.
This time, Claire Bennett did not fight back.
She agreed to the arranged marriage, trading her own future for her younger sister’s freedom—and a chance to escape New York and the man who had hurt her so deeply.
Everyone thought it was merely a marriage of convenience, with each getting something out of the arrangement.
But no one knew what unexpected turn of fate lay behind this marriage.
Claire’s POV
Three hours earlier, I had received a call from Julian Prescott.
It was the first time he had reached out to me since our fight three months ago.
His voice over the phone was as cool and aloof as ever, his words brief.
“Claire Bennett, come to the Emerald Bay villa. We need to talk.”
Then he hung up.
He gave me no chance to ask any questions. As always, he simply expected obedience, as though he were giving orders to his dog.
I had to admit that, for a moment, a ripple stirred the stagnant water in my heart, despite all my efforts to keep it still.
After all, I had been that dog for seven years.
I even stood in front of the mirror and carefully covered the faint shadows beneath my eyes with my most expensive concealer. I put on his favorite perfume and changed into the white dress he had once said looked beautiful on me.
Seven years of love, of endless compromises and concessions, had trained me into a pathetic habit. All he had to do was crook a finger, and I would run to him like a trained pet, my tail wagging.
Even when I knew another carefully planned humiliation might be waiting for me.
The car came to a smooth stop outside the Emerald Bay villa. When Henry, the butler, saw me, something complicated crossed his face. He looked as if he wanted to say something, but held back.
My heart lurched, but I still smiled and nodded at him before walking straight inside.
In the foyer, an unfamiliar pair of pink heels lay askew on the floor. A man’s suit jacket and tie were scattered beside them.
I stopped. I did not cry or make a scene. My expression did not even change.
I simply changed into slippers in silence and climbed to the second floor, one step at a time.
I knew every corner of this villa so well that I could have found his study with my eyes closed.
The study door was ajar. Muffled, intimate sounds drifted from inside, followed by a girl’s coy complaint.
“Julian Prescott, you’re so bad… You’ve made me all swollen down there…”
I pushed open the door without expression.
Inside, Julian Prescott had his arms wrapped around a girl who looked very young. Her face was buried against his chest, leaving only a stretch of pale neck exposed.
Several buttons on his shirt were undone. His usually immaculate hair was mussed, and a smile full of desire and indulgence curved his lips.
He looked up at the sound.
The moment he saw me, his smile vanished, replaced by impatience and irritation.
“Claire Bennett, who said you could come in without knocking?”
The girl in his arms lifted her head timidly, like a startled fawn.
Her face was sweet and innocent, her eyes large and round. Now shimmering with tears, they gazed at me, making her look pitiful and vulnerable.
I recognized her.
Chloe Reed, a sophomore in film school who had recently gained some attention through a web series.
My social media account still showed the traces of my personally stepping in to defend her against posts attacking her.
Julian Prescott had told me she was a promising up-and-coming actress and asked me to look out for her.
So this was how he was looking out for her.
“Julian Prescott, who’s this?”
Chloe Reed’s voice was as soft and sweet as cotton candy, with just the right touch of fear.
Julian Prescott ignored her. He merely straightened his clothes at an unhurried pace, then turned his gaze to me.
“Since you’ve seen for yourself, there’s no point hiding it.”
He took a velvet box from a drawer and tossed it onto the desk in front of me.
“Here. Take this back.”
I looked down. A pair of rings rested inside the box. Julian’s grandmother had given them to us when we got engaged.
Julian Prescott’s indifferent voice sounded above me.
“I want to marry Chloe, so let’s call off the engagement.”
Not a trace of guilt. Not a moment’s hesitation.
I stopped looking at the rings and let my gaze settle on my left wrist.
Around it was a silver bracelet Julian Prescott had given me for my eighteenth birthday.
He had told me to wear it for the rest of my life, just as he would stay by my side for the rest of his.
In seven years, I had never taken it off.
I raised my eyes and looked at him calmly.
“Understood.”
My composure seemed to surprise him. His brows drew together slightly. Then, as if something had occurred to him, his voice took on its familiar mocking edge.
“What, no scene this time? I thought you’d cry and threaten me like you always do. Claire Bennett, those tricks get old.”
I said nothing. I simply held out my left hand and began struggling to pull off the bracelet.
I had worn it for too long. It scraped my skin raw, leaving it red and burning.
Beside him, Chloe Reed covered her mouth in feigned surprise.
“Claire Bennett, please don’t do this. Julian Prescott didn’t mean it that way. You’ll only hurt him if you hurt yourself.”
It sounded like a performance—and a provocation.
Sure enough, Julian Prescott’s gaze turned cold. He walked over and seized my wrist.
“Claire Bennett, what game are you playing now?”
I sucked in a breath at the pain, but I smiled.
“Julian Prescott.” I spoke his name clearly.
“You’re the one who wanted to call off the engagement. This bracelet belongs to the Prescott family. Isn’t returning it exactly what I should do?”
He stared at me, as if searching my face for even the slightest hint that I was putting on an act.
But he found nothing.
There was nothing on my face except the tears brought on by the pain.
So this was how a heart died. Without a sound.
At last, he let go, his eyes unreadable.
Using every bit of strength I had, I endured the searing pain and finally pulled the bracelet off my wrist. An ugly red mark stood out starkly against my skin.
I gently set the bracelet on the desk beside the rings.
“Mr. Prescott, Ms. Reed, congratulations on your upcoming marriage. May you be happy together forever.”
With that, I turned and walked out of the study without a backward glance.
As I drove away, I finally lost the fight to hold back my tears, and they spilled down my face.
Seven years, it turned out, lasted no longer than a slap.
Loud, and painful.

Claire’s POV
It was already eleven at night when I returned to the Bennett family home.
The living room was brightly lit. My father, Richard Bennett, and my stepmother, Vivian Hayes, sat stiffly on the couch, clearly waiting for me.
The moment I walked in, Vivian Hayes spoke with thinly veiled sarcasm.
“Oh, so you do remember where you live? I thought you’d be spending another night at the Prescott family’s place.”
I was too exhausted to so much as lift my eyes. Ignoring her, I headed straight for the stairs.
“Stop right there!”
Richard Bennett barked the order and hurled a tablet at my feet.
“See for yourself!”
On the screen was a statement just released by Prescott Group’s public relations department. It announced that Mr. Julian Prescott and Claire Bennett had called off their engagement, along with the happy news of his upcoming engagement to Ms. Chloe Reed.
The accompanying photo showed Julian Prescott and Chloe Reed in an intimate pose, his arm around her waist, his smile brimming with satisfaction.
You certainly moved fast, Julian Prescott.
Less than three hours after our breakup, he had publicly cut ties with me, as though he feared I might cling to him and sully his reputation.
“Claire Bennett! What the hell did you do? Why would the Prescott family suddenly call off the engagement?”
Richard Bennett’s face was livid.
He had never cared about how much I had suffered. All that mattered to him was whether he had lost his way into the Prescott family’s circle.
I was too tired to say a single word. All I wanted was to go to my room and get some sleep.
When I remained silent, Vivian Hayes added fuel to the fire.
“Richard, why are you even asking her? Just look at the rumors going around. Everyone’s saying she can’t have children. And all those shameful things she did to latch on to Julian Prescott back then—her reputation has been ruined for ages. Think about who the Prescott family are. How could they agree to a marriage like that?”
When had those rumors started spreading?
Probably three years ago, when I had drunk on Julian Prescott’s behalf until I ended up with alcohol poisoning and damaged my health.
The doctor had told me the damage meant I would have difficulty conceiving in the future.
Julian Prescott was the only person I had ever told.
And now he had let the whole world know.
My suffering meant nothing to him. Perhaps he even found it funny.
And now the people laughing at me were my own father and stepmother.
Looking at the two ugly, twisted faces before me, I suddenly found it all so coldhearted and absurd.
“I’m the one who doesn’t want to get married,” I said flatly.
Richard Bennett looked as though he had just heard the most ridiculous joke in the world.
“You? Who do you think you are? Let me tell you something, Claire Bennett. I haven’t sent your sister’s tuition or living expenses overseas this month yet! If you can’t sort things out with Julian Prescott, she can pack her bags and come crawling back!”
The same trick again. Threatening me with the person I cared about most.
Ever since my mother died, Richard Bennett had treated Lily as nothing more than my sister and a tool he could use against me, rather than his own daughter.
If Lily came back, she would face the same life I did.
Keeping Lily far away from them and letting her grow up safely abroad was my greatest wish now.
For the past seven years, that was why I had made myself so small before the Bennett family and Julian Prescott.
But things were different now.
I lifted my head and met his gaze calmly.
“So? What do you want?”
My reaction stunned both Richard Bennett and Vivian Hayes.
They were used to me meekly accepting whatever they did to me. They hadn’t expected me to question them so calmly.
Vivian immediately put on a phony smile and took my hand.
“Claire Bennett, don’t blame your father. He only wants what’s best for you. Now that things haven’t worked out with the Prescott family, we can’t just leave you in limbo. Do you remember the Blackwood family of San Francisco? They’re looking to arrange a marriage for their heir. They originally wanted your sister, but Lily is still so young and immature…”
The Blackwood family of San Francisco.
Supposedly one of the wealthiest and most powerful families, but their heir, Adrian Blackwood, was a cripple.
Rumor had it that Adrian Blackwood had been in an accident in his teens and lost the use of both legs.
Afterward, he had undergone a drastic change in temperament, becoming notoriously violent and ill-tempered.
Not one of his caregivers had lasted three months.
No one dared marry into his family.
So this opportunity had fallen to me—a woman the Prescott family had rejected, whose reputation was in ruins, who might be unable to have children.
They made it sound like I was getting the better end of the deal.
They wanted to sell me off and squeeze out whatever value I had left.
“As long as you agree, the Blackwood family is willing to give us 300 million as a gift. They’ll even help your younger siblings get into the Ivy League and cover all their expenses.”
Vivian’s voice was full of enticement.
Three hundred million.
My sister, who was still in high school. My entire life. In Richard Bennett’s eyes, that was all I was worth.
I looked at his greedy face, cold settling deep inside me.
I would be trading one nightmare for another.
But at least San Francisco was far from New York.
Far enough that I would never have to see Julian Prescott again, never have to live in the shadow of the past seven years.
At least this time, the choice was mine.
My marriage in exchange for my sister’s future—and a chance to leave the past behind and start over.
It was a worthwhile trade.
I pulled my hand out of Vivian’s grasp and looked at Richard Bennett.
“I’ll marry him.”
Relief and elation instantly spread across Richard Bennett’s and Vivian’s faces.
New York. Julian Prescott.
This city, this relationship, all these awful people and their messes.
I was done with all of it.

Claire’s POV
On the third day after agreeing to marry into the family in San Francisco, I met my best friend, Emma Parker, for lunch at a downtown restaurant.
It was a farewell of sorts, and a chance to clear my head.
The moment Emma sat down, she took my hand, her eyes red.
“Claire Bennett, I heard everything. Julian Prescott is such a bastard. How could he do this to you? And Chloe Reed—if you hadn’t stood up for her back then, those people online would have torn her apart!”
I smiled and handed her a tissue.
“Why are you crying? I’m not the one who should be crying. I asked you here today because I wanted to tell you I’m getting married.”
Emma stopped crying abruptly.
“Married? To who? Did Julian Prescott come crawling back? No, wait—even if he did, I’d be the first to make him pay!”
“It’s not him.”
I stirred my lemonade, my voice as calm as if I were talking about someone else.
“It’s Adrian Blackwood, from the Blackwood family of San Francisco.”
Emma sucked in a breath, her expression instantly darkening.
“Adrian Blackwood? The one who supposedly can’t use his legs and has a horrible temper?”
I nodded. “Yes, him.”
“Claire Bennett, have you lost your mind?!”
She shot to her feet, drawing stares from the neighboring tables.
“You just got out of one nightmare, and now you’re walking straight into another! What are your father and stepmother threatening you with? If you need money, I have it. Don’t do something reckless!”
I pulled her back into her seat, warmth spreading through my chest.
I knew she genuinely wanted what was best for me.
“Emma, hear me out.”
I met her eyes and spoke earnestly.
“This is my choice. If I don’t leave, they’ll control me for the rest of my life. If I marry someone all the way in San Francisco, at least I’ll be free.”
“Besides, the Blackwood family offered me something I couldn’t refuse.”
I told her they had promised to cover all my sister’s education expenses.
Emma fell silent. After a long moment, she sighed.
“You always do this. You carry everything on your own. But what about you? Claire Bennett, have you thought about what you want?”
What I wanted?
I hadn’t asked myself that question in a very long time.
For the past seven years, it had felt as though my entire life existed for Julian Prescott.
Whatever he liked, I learned.
Whatever he hated about me, I changed.
By the end, I had almost forgotten who Claire Bennett really was.
Maybe marrying a man with a disability whom I had never met was the first step toward doing something for myself.
As we talked, a familiar figure appeared beside our table.
It was Chloe Reed.
She wore a white suit from Chanel’s latest collection, with immaculate makeup and a limited-edition Hermès bag in her hand. She looked nothing like the innocent college student I had seen at the villa three days earlier.
Julian Prescott wasn’t with her.
“Claire Bennett, what a coincidence.”
She was all smiles, but there was no warmth in her eyes, only open provocation.
Emma was about to snap at her, but I held her back.
I shook my head at Emma, then looked up at Chloe Reed and curled my lips.
“Not really. I specifically chose a restaurant you couldn’t afford so I could avoid people like you.”
Chloe Reed’s expression froze for a moment before her smile returned.
“You’re so funny, Claire Bennett. Oh, by the way, Julian Prescott and I are getting engaged next week. You absolutely have to come. It just wouldn’t feel complete without your blessing.”
As she spoke, she deliberately swept her hair aside, revealing the dazzling diamond necklace around her neck.
I recognized it. Julian Prescott had bought it at an auction and given it to me for my twenty-fifth birthday.
So something he had given me could simply end up around another woman’s neck.
My heart had already gone numb, but I could still feel that dull ache.
“Ms. Reed.”
I set down my knife and fork, leaned back in my chair, and regarded her with studied ease.
“Does wearing someone else’s castoffs really make you feel that accomplished?”
“You!”
A crack finally appeared in Chloe Reed’s facade.
“What are you talking about? Julian Prescott gave this to me! He said he’d never given anyone such an expensive gift before!”
“Really?” I gave a soft laugh.
“Then do you know that necklace has a lovely name? Eternity. When he gave it to me, he said it meant forever. Apparently, Mr. Prescott’s forever has a pretty short shelf life.”
Chloe Reed’s face went completely white.
Humiliated and furious, she lost control of her words.
“What are you so smug about? Claire Bennett, you’re just a woman Julian Prescott got tired of playing with! You think I don’t know? You can’t even have children! How could you possibly compete with me?”
She lowered her voice for that last part, but it struck where it hurt most.
In an instant, all the blood in my body rushed to my head.
She kept going, her voice brimming with vicious delight.
“Oh, and I almost forgot to tell you. Julian Prescott bought the rooftop your mother jumped from when she killed herself. He said the view is lovely, so he’s going to turn it into a conservatory. We’ll be able to have afternoon tea there and grow flowers. The anniversary of your mother’s death is coming up, isn’t it? Why don’t you come up and join us?”
Smack!
The sharp crack of a slap rang through the restaurant.
I was on my feet, my palm stinging.
Chloe Reed held her cheek and stared at me in disbelief, her eyes instantly filling with tears.
“You… you actually hit me?!”
I could endure her flaunting Julian Prescott’s love. I could endure her taking everything that had been mine.
But I would never tolerate her using my dead mother to hurt me!
That was the line she did not get to cross!
I looked at her, my voice ice-cold. “That slap was for my mother.”

Claire’s POV
The commotion drew the restaurant manager—and Julian Prescott.
He pulled Chloe Reed, who was sobbing with tears streaming down her face, protectively behind him. The look he gave me held a coldness and disgust I had never seen before.
“Claire Bennett, what the hell is wrong with you?”
Chloe Reed hid in his arms and pointed at me, her voice full of wounded accusation.
“Julian Prescott, all I did was invite Claire Bennett to our engagement party, and she hit me…”
Julian Prescott’s expression darkened further. He looked at me as though I were some unreasonable shrew.
“Apologize to her,” he ordered.
Suddenly, the man in front of me felt terrifyingly unfamiliar.
Seven years, and he had never once asked why.
No matter who I argued with, no matter what had started it or what had happened, he always made me back down. Always made me apologize.
Because in his world, I, Claire Bennett, was supposed to be an accessory to his life—always understanding, always putting everyone else’s interests first, never causing him any trouble.
“I’ll say it one more time. Apologize to her.”
When I didn’t respond, a warning crept into Julian Prescott’s voice.
Beside me, Emma was shaking with anger. She couldn’t hold back any longer.
“Julian Prescott, are you blind? She was the one who brought up Claire Bennett’s mother to hurt her! She’s the one who should apologize!”
Julian Prescott’s gaze swept over Emma. “This has nothing to do with you,” he said coldly.
He looked back at me, his eyes holding nothing but impatience and disappointment.
“Claire Bennett, don’t make me lose what little regard I have left for you.”
What little regard he had left?
So that was all seven years of love amounted to now.
I laughed, but tears slipped down my face despite myself.
I looked at Chloe Reed, sheltered in his arms, then at his accusing face, and asked him, each word deliberate.
“Julian Prescott, what if I say no this time?”
His brows drew tightly together, as though he hadn’t expected me to resist him.
“Claire Bennett, don’t push me.”
Push him?
What had I pushed him to do?
Had I pushed him to fall in love with someone else?
Had I pushed him to call off our engagement?
Had I pushed him to trample my dignity underfoot?
Smack!
Another sharp slap rang out.
Only this time, it landed on my face.
The whole world went silent.
My cheek burned, the pain so intense it turned numb. My ears rang until I could barely hear the gasps and murmurs around me.
All I could see was Julian Prescott with his hand still raised, a flicker of shock crossing his face, as though even he hadn't expected to actually hit me.
“You made me do it. You know I don't hit women.”
Behind him, a smug smile curled Chloe Reed's lips, then vanished.
So this was how it ended.
That slap brought me to my senses more than his calling off our engagement at the villa, more than seeing the necklace he'd given me around another woman's neck.
I raised a hand to wipe away my tears and looked at him, utterly calm.
“Fine. I'll apologize.”
Julian seemed to relax, thinking I'd finally given in.
I turned to Chloe, looked at her face, and said slowly, “I'm sorry.”
Then, as everyone stared in disbelief, I looked Julian straight in the eye and continued:
“Julian Prescott, I apologize for loving you for the past seven years.”
“I apologize for giving up who I was and losing my dignity for you.”
“I apologize for being so blind.”
Julian's expression shifted from shock to fury.
“Claire Bennett! You—”
“Julian Prescott.”
I cut him off, using every ounce of strength I had to force a smile that looked worse than tears.
“You were the one who didn't want me anymore.”
“I promise you'll never have to see me again.”
“Never again. Just as you wished.”
With that, I picked up my bag and walked out of the restaurant without looking back, Emma Parker supporting me with a worried look.
Behind me, Julian roared, barely containing his fury, but I no longer cared.
The wind in New York was so cold. That was good. At least it could clear my head completely.

Claire's POV
Emma went to get her car from the parking lot and told me to wait outside the restaurant.
I'd barely stopped when I heard high heels clicking down the steps behind me.
Chloe walked up beside me. The tear tracks on her face had dried, and one cheek was still red, but her eyes were full of triumph as she looked at me.
“Claire Bennett, how did that slap feel?”
“That's what you get for refusing to let go of Julian Prescott. Do you finally know your place? Then get lost already. Stop hanging around him, being an eyesore and asking to get hit.”
She was smiling now just as gleefully as she'd cried so pitifully inside the restaurant.
Julian would never see this side of her. Or perhaps he wouldn't care even if he did.
I pulled my coat tighter around me, not even bothering to look her in the eye.
“You picked up the trash I threw away and treated it like treasure. You really haven't seen much of the world.”
Chloe's smile froze.
She'd probably thought that after Julian slapped me, all I could do was cry.
“Who are you calling trash?”
Gritting her teeth, she raised a hand to hit me.
I didn't dodge. I lifted my eyes to hers.
“Haven't you been slapped enough?”
Her hand stopped in midair. The red mark on her face hadn't faded yet. Apparently remembering how much it had hurt, she finally lowered her hand in frustration.
“Just you wait.”
She glared viciously at me but didn't dare come any closer.
Suddenly, a deafening engine roar came from the intersection.
A black sedan barreled straight toward us without slowing down.
The headlights blinded me, and I instinctively stepped aside.
“Chloe!”
Julian's shout exploded behind me.
He rushed out of the restaurant, yanked Chloe into his arms, and shielded her as he moved out of the car's path.
As he lunged past me, his elbow slammed into my shoulder.
I was already standing at the curb. The force sent me pitching straight into the road.
By the time the brakes screeched, it was too late for me to move.
The front of the car struck my side at the waist, throwing me through the air. My back slammed hard against the ground.
Pain radiated from deep inside my bones. I opened my mouth, but no sound came out.
A heavy, dragging pain pulsed through my lower abdomen, and warm liquid trickled down between my thighs.
My vision began to blur. With difficulty, I turned my head toward the sidewalk.
Julian was holding Chloe, cradling her face and checking her over, his face tight with worry.
“Are you hurt anywhere? Does anything hurt?”
His hands were shaking, his eyes filled with lingering fear and concern.
Chloe huddled in his arms without so much as a speck of dust on her clothes. She looked at me over his shoulder, the corners of her mouth lifting.
Julian stood just a few steps away from me, but he never once looked in my direction.
I closed my eyes and lost consciousness completely.
When I woke again, the smell of disinfectant filled my nose.
Emma was slumped over beside the bed. Her eyes were red and swollen, with dark circles underneath. It looked as though she'd stayed with me until morning.
When she saw me open my eyes, she sat bolt upright, tears spilling down her face.
“Claire Bennett, you're finally awake.”
She held my hand and tried several times to speak before finally choking out the words.
“They couldn't save the baby. You were ten weeks pregnant. Did you know?”
I froze.
The doctor had told me I would have difficulty conceiving, so when my period was late, I'd assumed all the turmoil Julian and the Bennett family had put me through had thrown off my cycle.
I rested a hand on my lower abdomen. It was flat. I couldn't feel anything.
But my baby had really been there.
After my mother died and Lily was sent abroad for school, no one in the Bennett family treated me like family anymore.
For all those years, Julian had been the only person who was good to me.
That was why I'd clung to him so desperately. To stay by his side, I'd humbled myself until I no longer recognized who I was.
I'd dreamed of having a home with him.
A child with eyes just like his.
On weekends, we'd build things with our child out of blocks in the living room.
At night, he'd sit beside the bed and read bedtime stories while I listened with my head on his shoulder. Once our child fell asleep, we'd turn out the light together.
I'd imagined those scenes countless times.
Now our child had really come into my life, and I'd lost it before I even knew it existed.
Tears slipped from the corners of my eyes and soaked into the pillow.
The door to the room opened. A nurse came in to change my dressing and looked at Emma.
“The patient's family still hasn't come?”
“No. If there's anything we need to know, just tell me.”
The doctor followed her in, looking through my chart as he spoke to me.
“You lost a lot of blood, and you're very weak. You'll need plenty of rest while you recover. If your friend hadn't called an ambulance right away, we wouldn't have been able to save you.”
The nurse added from beside him,
“We kept calling your family while we were trying to save you, but no one answered. Your friend was the one who stayed with you.”
My family contact was Richard Bennett.
Ever since my mother died, he hadn't cared whether I lived or died. Whether he answered that call made no difference to him.
When I lost my mother, I lost my father, too. Lily was the only family I had left in this world.
She was the only reason I'd swallowed all those years of humiliation in the Bennett household.
After the doctor and nurse left, Emma couldn't hold back anymore.
“I used your phone to call that bastard Julian Prescott. He saw it was you and hung up. I called several more times before he finally answered, and all he said was, ‘I'm not letting you off so easily this time.’ Then he hung up again. He didn't even let me speak!”
Her eyes were red with anger, and the hand gripping mine was shaking.
“I saw everything. He knocked you into the road! He almost got you killed! He must be blind to fall for a bitch like Chloe Reed. Sooner or later, he's going to regret it!”
After venting, she softened her voice and tucked the blanket around me.
“Claire Bennett, don't be sad. Getting away from him is a good thing.”
I looked at her and smiled.
“Don't worry about me. I'm not sad.”
“I've already let him go. Nothing he does can hurt me anymore.”

Claire's POV
For the next few days, I stayed in the hospital alone.
Aside from Emma, who came to keep me company after work every day, no one else came through the door.
No one from the Bennett family even checked on me, and Julian certainly wasn't going to come.
But updates about him never stopped. Trending posts, business news, videos filmed by strangers—my phone kept pushing them at me.
He'd taken Chloe to Tahiti.
In the photos, Chloe lounged in the sun on the deck of an overwater villa while Julian stood behind her, holding an umbrella to shade her.
Tahiti was the place I'd wanted to visit most.
I'd mentioned it to him so many times, but he'd always said he was too busy with work to get away.
It turned out he did have time. He just hadn't wanted to spend it on me.
The stories that followed drew even more attention.
On the beach, he crouched down to tie Chloe's sandal straps.
Once he was done, he carried her on his back and strolled along the shore.
A passerby uploaded the video, and the comments were full of people gushing about how sweet they were.
Less than two days later, he took Chloe to Disney. Wearing Mickey Mouse ears, he held her close and made a heart for the camera.
At an auction two nights earlier, he'd pledged to outbid every other bidder for a set of pink diamond jewelry. Chloe clung to his arm, grinning from ear to ear.
Julian had done things like that for me, too.
During those first days of our relationship, when my heels rubbed my feet raw, he'd carry me back to the car.
If I casually mentioned wanting to see a fashion show, he'd fly to Paris with me the next day.
Later, he did less and less. Eventually, he stopped altogether.
When I wanted to see a movie, he worried about being photographed.
When I asked him to go to an amusement park, he said it was childish.
When I wanted him to go shopping with me, he handed me a card and told me to buy whatever I wanted on my own.
By the end, even when I asked him to have dinner with me, he'd claim he had a business engagement.
But when Chloe wanted those things, every excuse disappeared.
In the end, he'd simply grown tired of me. He no longer thought I was worth the effort.
That night, Chloe sent me several photos.
They'd been taken in a hotel room. Julian was shirtless on a rumpled king-size bed, and Chloe lay naked in his arms. They were kissing.
A message followed immediately.
[Julian Prescott says he loves my body. He can never get enough of me. What can I say? I'm young. He also said he lost interest in you ages ago. Every time, you had to beg him before he'd reluctantly throw you a bone.]
I stared at the screen and let out a cold laugh.
I took screenshots of all the photos and messages and saved them in a separate folder.
I would keep them. They would come in handy someday.
That afternoon, I had just taken my medication and lain down when my phone rang.
Julian Prescott’s name appeared on the screen.
I waited until it was about to stop ringing before answering.
“Come to the top floor of St. James Hospital. Now.”
I froze. “What for?”
“It’s important.”
Then he hung up.
I was staying at St. James Hospital, and he didn’t even know.
I couldn’t imagine what important business he could possibly have with me.
After some hesitation, I decided to go and see.
The elevator doors opened onto a hallway crowded with doctors and nurses. Every face was tense, and even their footsteps were hushed.
Thinking something terrible had happened, I walked farther in, my heart tightening.
The door to the VIP room at the end of the hall opened. Julian Prescott stepped out, his brow furrowed, his face full of anxiety.
When he saw me, his gaze lingered on my deathly pale face, and he frowned instinctively.
But what he said was, “That was fast. What, you can’t live without me?”
I didn’t want to waste my breath on him.
“What do you want? If that’s all, I’m leaving.”
I turned to go, but he grabbed my arm.
“Chloe fell down the stairs. She’s bleeding. She has a rare blood type, and the blood bank can’t get any here in time. You have the same type.”
He spoke as if what came next went without saying.
“Give her blood. Once you’re done, I’ll let that little scene you made taking off the bracelet slide. You can even have the bracelet back.”
I looked at him. It was almost laughable.
Just days ago, I had miscarried and nearly bled to death on the operating table. I still needed to lean on the wall to walk, yet he wanted me to give Chloe Reed my blood.
“Keep the bracelet. I don’t want it. Find someone else to give her blood.”
I shook off his hand and headed for the elevator.
“Stop her.”
Two bodyguards immediately rushed forward and pinned me to a bench in the hallway.
Julian Prescott tipped his chin at the doctor. “Draw her blood.”
The doctor approached with a blood collection bag. He looked at me, then spoke hesitantly.
“Mr. Prescott, she looks very unwell. She may not be fit to donate blood. We need to examine her first.”
“She’s perfectly healthy.”
Julian Prescott frowned. “Chloe can’t wait. Skip the examination.”
I struggled desperately. “I was in a car accident! I can’t give blood!”
Julian Prescott looked down at me, his face cold.
“You’d make up a lie like that just to avoid saving someone? Claire Bennett, when did you become so heartless and vicious?”
On the day of the accident, he’d only had eyes for Chloe Reed. He still didn’t know I was the person his car had sent flying.
The needle pierced my arm, and dark red blood flowed through the tubing into the bag.
The bodyguards held me down so tightly I couldn’t move. All I could do was watch the bag slowly fill.
When it was full, the doctor withdrew the needle.
“Mr. Prescott, that’s all we can take. Any more would be dangerous.”
“Take more. Better to have extra.”
“We really can’t. In her condition—”
“As long as it won’t kill her, keep going.”
With that, Julian Prescott turned and went into Chloe Reed’s room without looking back.
The doctor shook his head and sighed as he attached a fresh bag and inserted the needle into my arm again.
Cold spread from my arm through my entire body. My vision kept going black, and the nurse calling my name sounded farther and farther away.
From inside the room, I heard Julian Prescott soothing Chloe Reed. “Don’t be scared. The blood will be here soon.”
Seven years ago, when I’d been delirious with fever, he had sat beside my bed and soothed me just like that.
I closed my eyes and lost consciousness completely.

Claire’s POV
When I woke again, I was back in my own hospital room.
My head spun terribly. Bruises spread around the needle marks on my arm, and I was cold all over. Even moving my fingers left me exhausted.
Two nurses were talking outside, their voices carrying through the door.
“She’d already miscarried and lost all that blood, and she still went to donate more. Does she have a death wish?”
“Who knows? Maybe she has a thing for Mr. Prescott.”
The other nurse snorted. “But Mr. Prescott already has a girlfriend. How desperate can she be?”
“Exactly. His girlfriend is so lucky. A couple of days ago, she just scraped her knee. A Band-Aid would’ve done the job, but Mr. Prescott called in all the best doctors in the hospital to examine her from head to toe. He even had eight hundred milliliters of her rare blood type brought in, just in case.”
“I heard from someone on the top floor that he feeds her himself, even holds her water for her. He carries her whenever they go up or down the stairs.”
“And look at this one. A car accident and a miscarriage, barely a few days since they saved her life, and she gets dragged off to have blood drawn again. She’s been here all this time, and not a single family member has visited. It’s awful.”
Their footsteps gradually faded.
So Chloe Reed had only scraped her knee.
For that tiny injury, Julian Prescott had ordered his bodyguards to hold me down and taken eight hundred milliliters of my blood.
I stared at the ceiling. My eyes stung, but I had no tears left.
There was nothing about Julian Prescott I still longed for.
Over the next few days, Julian Prescott didn’t call.
News about Chloe Reed, however, kept coming.
First came the official announcement that she would star in a famous director’s new film. Right after that, she landed a regular spot on a hit variety show.
Less than two days later, a top luxury brand announced her as its global ambassador.
The internet was buzzing. An up-and-coming actress known for her online following had suddenly landed opportunities even A-list stars couldn’t get. No one had to guess who was backing her.
That was how Julian Prescott was. When he loved someone, he gave it everything, as though he wanted the whole world to know.
Seven years ago, he had loved me like that, too.
On the night of my eighteenth birthday, he had rented every advertising screen in the city just to wish me a happy birthday.
Back then, the entire city had known that the Prescott family’s heir cherished me.
Precisely because I knew what he looked like when he loved someone, I could see clearly that he no longer loved me.
Now, looking at those headlines, I felt calm.
Because I no longer loved him either.
I would treat the past seven years as a mistake I had made. It was over now.
But I would never forget what he and Chloe Reed had done to me, and I would never forgive them.
That afternoon, the door to my room opened, and Chloe Reed walked in.
With all the attention she had been getting lately, even her appearance had changed.
She wore a couture skirt suit and flawless makeup. Every gesture radiated confidence and wealth. The innocent act she had put on before was long gone.
She walked up to my bed and looked down at me.
“Seen the news? And the photos I sent you? Now do you understand how much Julian Prescott likes me? No matter how shameless you are, it’s time to back off.”
I regarded her coldly.
“If you were really that confident, you wouldn’t keep coming here to provoke me.”
“You!”
I had hit a nerve. Chloe Reed’s expression shifted, but she quickly suppressed her anger and smiled.
While she wasn’t paying attention, I started recording a video on my phone.
“Those two bags of blood you nearly died giving—do you know where they ended up?”
She bent toward me, her smile unbearably smug.
“In the trash! All I did was tell Julian Prescott I had a rare blood type and might need some, and he dragged you over to have your blood drawn.”
“I heard you miscarried after that car accident. Lost a lot of blood, too. What a shame. Julian Prescott only took eight hundred milliliters. Why didn’t he bleed you dry?”
I didn’t answer. I lifted my phone and pointed the camera at her.
Chloe Reed’s smile froze. “What are you doing?”
“Recording you.”
I waved the phone. “Finished? If not, keep going.”
Chloe Reed’s expression changed drastically. She lunged at me, clawing for my phone.
Just then, the door opened.
I had pressed the call button earlier.
The nurse who had come in response rushed forward and stopped her.
“The patient needs rest. Please leave immediately!”
Chloe Reed tried to lunge at me again, but the nurse called security, and they dragged her out.
I looked down and checked the video. Every word she had said had been captured clearly.
I saved it in the folder with my screenshots, alongside the photos she had sent me before.

Claire’s POV
A few days later, I was discharged and went home to pack.
Not that there was much to pack.
I had no desire to take anything from the Bennett family, and the things Julian Prescott had given me hurt just to look at.
One by one, I cleared the designer handbags, high-end clothes, and jewelry out of my walk-in closet and piled them in the middle of the room.
Finally, I took a heavy box out of the safe.
Julian Prescott had given it to me on my twentieth birthday.
He had said that every year, he would put in a piece of jewelry he thought suited me best.
When the box was full, he would marry me.
It had been seven years. The box had long since filled up.
Inside were the diamond-studded earrings he had bought me with his bonus after landing his first project.
There was the antique brooch we had found at a Paris flea market on our first trip abroad together.
And the emerald ring his mother had left me…
I had once treasured every piece.
Now, they were nothing but a pile of cold stones.
I closed the lid and put it in the cardboard box of things I intended to return, along with the blank wish card he had signed when he was young, promising to grant me any one wish.
That wish card was my last trump card.
Back when Julian Prescott’s grandfather was still alive, Julian Prescott had signed it in front of both our families to reassure me.
He had said that as long as I had that card, I could ask him for one thing, anytime, anywhere, and he would never refuse.
I had once thought I would redeem it when I married him, as the most romantic fulfillment of his promise.
Later, I had thought it would be my last bargaining chip to win him back.
But now, I only wanted to return it.
I didn’t want to owe him anything anymore.
I called his assistant, Ethan Brooks, gave him the address, and asked him to come pick everything up.
Ethan Brooks’s voice was as cold as ever.
“Ms. Bennett, Mr. Prescott is very busy preparing for his engagement party with Ms. Reed. I’m afraid he has no time to deal with such trivial matters.”
“Trivial matters?
I kept my emotions in check. “There are personal belongings of his in the boxes. They’re important.”
Ethan Brooks’s tone grew impatient.
“Ms. Bennett, I know you’re upset, but Mr. Prescott really is moving on with his life. Why keep clinging to him like this?”
He thought I was playing games, desperately trying to hold on.
The truth was, he had never taken me seriously.
By the time he became Julian’s assistant, Julian was already treating me coldly.
Julian’s attitude toward me dictated how his assistant treated me.
Ethan had always seen me as a nuisance he had no choice but to deal with.
I took a deep breath and told him as calmly as I could:
“There are important belongings of Julian’s in these boxes. You need to pick them up before five this afternoon. Otherwise, if anything goes missing, you’ll be responsible.”
There were a few seconds of silence on the other end before he reluctantly agreed.
“Fine. I’ll come by this afternoon.”
At four thirty, Ethan arrived, just as promised.
He didn’t come any farther than the foyer.
I pushed the large cardboard boxes I had packed toward him.
“Ms. Bennett,” he said pointedly as he directed the driver to carry them out.
“You need to look ahead. Everyone knows Mr. Prescott and Ms. Reed are a perfect match. Doing this will only embarrass you.”
I didn’t explain or argue.
He was nothing but Julian’s dog. There was no point arguing with him.
I simply looked at him and said evenly,
“Check that everything’s there, then take it all back to him. After this, we owe each other nothing.”
Once they had loaded everything into the car, I closed the front door.
Three days later, a black stretch Lincoln pulled up outside the Bennett family’s house.
The Blackwood family had sent it to pick me up.
I wore a simple white dress and carried one small suitcase.
Under Richard Bennett’s and Vivian Hayes’s conflicted gazes, I got into the car and set off for San Francisco.
I was leaving, but this wasn’t the end.
It was time to make Julian Prescott and Richard Bennett pay for everything they had put me through over the years.
