At the new-entrepreneurs panel forum, Pamela Simmons gave the press three chances to ask questions. "Ms. Simmons, who is the most important person on your road to building this company?" The reporter regretted it the moment the words were out. The question was a wasted chance. Because that person had to be me. Jim James, only son of the chairman of the Pacific Chamber of Commerce, and Pamela Simmons's lawful husband. Down in the audience, I let a corner of my mouth lift too. Waiting for her to say it. But what Pamela said stunned the room. "The most important person in my life... is the roommate I shared an apartment with." "Ten years ago, when I'd just come to New York to grind it out, I split a single bed with someone, both of us renting a three-hundred-dollar basement apartment." "Only beside him could I fall asleep in peace." "Without him at my side, there'd be no me today." The reporter sighed warmly. "Ms. Simmons, you're so loyal. You still hold on to that sisterhood from your struggling days." "No. Not a sister." She looked straight into the camera. "The roommate who shared that bed with me was a man." The room detonated. Every head turned toward me at once. Three seconds later, I lifted my hand and gave the order. "Find that man." "Then... take back everything Pamela has." 1 "Who is he?" I stopped Pamela backstage. She pinched the bridge of her nose. "Haven't found him yet." "Impossible." I let my mouth curve, studying her. "Three years ago, your company took off." "First thing you did was buy your parents a new house." "Second thing, you got your best friend a luxury car." "Your relatives, your classmates, your teachers... even the security guard at your gate. You slotted every one of them into Simmons Corp." "A woman as sentimental as you, and you'd forget the roommate who shared your bed, the one who matters most to you?" I bit down hard on those last words. Sure enough, Pamela's face changed. "I won't tell you." "Don't underestimate what I can do." I tipped her chin up, amused. Her body went stiff. Then the balance shifted. She rose onto her toes and pressed her forehead to mine. A staff member passing by flushed red and hurried off. Pamela's eyes were dark. "Jim, he matters to me. All those nights I couldn't get through, he was the one beside me, telling me to keep going." "That kind of encouragement has stayed with me all this time. That's why I said the most important person on my road was him." "But don't worry. We only slept on the same bed, with the blanket between us. Nothing crossed the line." She paused. "You're the only one I'll ever marry and have children with." She rarely said this much. Something in me softened. I'd barely begun to think about calling off the order when I caught the silver glint on her knuckle. The latest designer wedding rings, a globally limited-edition pair. One was on her hand. Then... where was the other? Not with me. I lowered my gaze and nodded. "I lost face today. You're going to make it up to me." Pamela let out a faint breath and nuzzled her forehead against mine, close and easy. Then she settled a gentle smile onto her face. "All right. Whatever you say, Young Mr. James." Pamela took me to an exclusive private fine-dining place to make it up to me. The setting was lovely. But my attention stayed on my phone the whole time. My people worked fast. In under half a day they'd already pinned down the identity of Pamela's bed-sharing roommate. An employee at her own company, Chad Matthews. I narrowed my eyes. A name I'd never heard. Not a secretary. Not a department head. An ordinary rank-and-file employee. And one who'd been with the company since Simmons Corp's founding. It took me one second to understand what Pamela had done. She'd been afraid that giving him a high post would tip me off. The further I scrolled through the file, the colder I went. All these years, every time Pamela traveled for work, she'd brought Chad Matthews and no one else. I remembered watching a foreign movie with her long ago, when she'd said: "I have a friend who loves to travel, but we were both too poor. I promised him that once I could afford it, I'd take him all over the world." So they went to Switzerland, to North America, to Japan, to Australia... Business trips on paper. In truth, showing the person she loved the whole world. And to think I'd assumed that so-called friend was her best girlfriend. I'd wired her plenty of money to go traveling with that friend. A cold smile pulled at my mouth. All at once Pamela slid the phone out of my hand and set it face-down on the table. She rolled up the sleeve of her lace blouse with a delicate air, picked up a piece of fish, and fed it to me. I opened my mouth on reflex. Watching me chew, she let her mouth curve. "Eat properly, Young Mr. James. Stop looking at your phone." Then I froze where I sat. The heat of ginger spread across my tongue, flushing my whole body while my face went white. I spat it out at once. "What's wrong?" Pamela frowned, patting my back in a hurry, calling for help. I threw off her hand. "Pamela, you know this. I'm allergic to ginger." The head chef walked in as I said it and bent at once into an apology. "I'm so sorry, Ms. Simmons. You didn't leave a special note this time, so we made it the way you usually like it, heavy on the ginger. This one's on the house." Pamela stiffened, meeting my searching look. "I'm allergic to ginger. You don't eat it either." "So who's the one who loves ginger?" She didn't even need to answer. Chad Matthews's file spelled it out on my phone. "Chad Matthews loves it. Ms. Simmons has taken him to every high-end restaurant in the city. These are the charge records." "He's especially fond of the fish at The Bamboo Grove, extra ginger. This year alone Ms. Simmons has brought him nearly a hundred times." Pamela recovered her composure fast. "A client ordered it." The chef caught that something was off and nodded along, again and again. I pressed my phone dark. "This fish is good. I'm buying it outright. Five million. From now on it's made only for me, and never for anyone else." The chef, handed a fortune out of nowhere, grinned so wide he couldn't close his mouth. And beside me, Pamela's eyes dipped low, the veins standing out on her hand as it clenched tight.

Early the next morning, I went to Simmons Corp. As a board director, I had my own private office, of course. But I rarely came in, so the staff didn't really know my face. "Who's that?" "That's one of the owners of the company. He's the president's husband!" "He's gorgeous. I heard the whole reason the president made it big is thanks to Mr. James." Somewhere in that murmuring, one man let out a quiet sneer. I found his face in the crowd right away. "Chad Matthews." Called out by name, Chad couldn't hide the panic. He turned his head away on instinct. I didn't give him room to dodge. "Come to my office." He gritted his teeth and followed me in, dragging his feet. He stood in front of the desk, not daring to meet my eyes. "Take it off." "What?" I lifted my chin. "The ring. Take it off." Chad's hand shot to cover the ring at once. It was the other half of the pair on Pamela's finger. He stiffened his neck. "Mr. James, you may run everything under the sun, but you don't get to run what accessories an employee wears." I leaned back in the chair and looked at him coldly. "That ring is from G. Limited to one pair worldwide. Pamela bought it on my account. So how did it end up on your hand?" "Unless... you stole it?" His face flushed red. "No... I didn't." "Then where did it come from?" "Ms. Simmons gave it to me." "Oh?" I raised an eyebrow. "You're no relation to her, you're not even an important employee. And she gave you a wedding ring worth a million dollars?" "You stole it, that's what happened. An amount like that could put you away for decades." "I did not!" Chad's voice climbed, and then he just gave up all pretense. He looked at me, taunting. "Fine, Mr. James. I'm the roommate Ms. Simmons confessed her feelings for in public, the one who shared a bed with her. This ring is exactly what Pamela gave me. Are you satisfied?" He kept going. "Pamela and I slept in the same bed for a whole year. Countless nights we fell asleep in each other's arms. She said my arms were the warmest place there was." "We even kissed a lot of times by accident. I was her first man, so she thinks about me, she misses me, she gave me a ring. So what? What's the problem?" I nodded. "Leave the ring. You can get out." "What?" I stood, crossed my arms, and kept my voice cool. "That is marital property shared between husband and wife. You want to keep it? Fine. Pay me back five hundred thousand." "And one more thing. You're fired." "Why?" "Because I don't like the look of you." I waved a hand, and my people came in. "The summons for the five hundred thousand will reach you soon. Don't bother packing. Leave now. Your severance won't be short." At that, my secretary came in and handed Chad a cardboard box. "Mr. Matthews, everything of yours is in here. You can go." "No, I'm not going!" But it wasn't up to him. He was hauled out and thrown from the building, and when he tried to crawl his way back, the facial recognition had already stopped letting him in. The staff pointed and whispered, not understanding why I'd come all the way here just to fire one low-level employee. I brushed off my hands, about to leave, when I saw a disheveled Chad walk back into the building. His face was glowing with satisfaction, but his voice came out oddly wronged. "Ms. Simmons, it was Mr. James who fired me." Heels clicked closer, and Pamela stepped out from behind him. Her face was full of fury. "Chad hasn't done anything wrong. He works hard and takes it seriously. Cancel the dismissal. Get back to your desk." "Yes, ma'am!" Chad answered brightly, walked past me with his head high and chest out, and knocked his shoulder into mine on the way. "No. Fired." "He stays." "Fired." The staff went silent as one, not daring to breathe in the standoff between us. "And if I say he has to leave today?" I held Pamela's eyes, hard. The next instant, a slap cracked through the air. The side of my face burned in a rush. Pamela's voice was ice. "That's my answer." "Ow." Chad's yelp came from behind me. Pamela hurried straight over to him. "I twisted my ankle. It hurts so much." Chad's wounded voice again. Without a word, Pamela helped him up. The two of them pressed close together, not a gap between them. Those long legs passed right by me, and without a single look back she helped Chad out of the building. The staff around me broke into whispers. Just then my phone buzzed with a text. An unknown number. I knew at a glance it was Chad. "Guess Mr. James still doesn't know. Ms. Simmons has slept in the same bed as me all these years." "She says she can only fall asleep next to me." "Every night she spent in a bed with you, she couldn't sleep a wink." I covered my face and slowly got to my feet. My cheek was scalding. But my voice was cold. "Simmons Corp. You really don't want it anymore."

Pamela came home late. She flipped on the light, saw me sitting on the couch, and froze for a second. Then she dug out an ice pack and pressed it to the side of my face, swollen high. Her lips pressed thin. "You shouldn't have treated a Simmons Corp employee like that." I laughed, cold. "Employee? Or your bedmate?" Her pupils shrank. "You know." "I do. I also know you kiss that man, sleep with him. It's filthy. It makes me sick." Pamela's eyes slowly went cold. "We've never done anything. Think what you want about me, but you don't get to smear Chad." "You threw Chad out in front of all those people. Did you ever think about how he felt?" Her chest rose and fell, hard. Every look she gave me was blame and reproach. Something in my chest clenched tight. "And what about me?" "What?" "You hit me in front of all those people. Did you ever think about how I felt?" "Do you still remember what you once promised me?" Pamela pressed her lips together. Clearly, she remembered too—after we made it official, she had stood in front of my parents and promised: "Mr. and Mrs. James, for the first half of his life, you never let him suffer a single hardship. For the second half, I won't let him suffer either." I gave a bitter little laugh. "I'm the only son of the chairman of the Pacific Chamber of Commerce. You know how proud I am." "But in front of all those people, you shattered my dignity and my pride." Pamela was silent for a long moment before she said, low: "I'm sorry." "But please, don't go after Chad anymore." She grabbed her coat and headed for the door. "Where are you going?" "To stay at the office." I couldn't help the cold laugh. We rarely slept in the same bed. Pamela said she slept badly, wasn't used to having someone beside her, was more comfortable sleeping alone at the office. I'd always believed that. Until Chad's text tore the whole thing open. "Not going to sleep with Chad?" My voice was flat. Her step stalled, and her voice shot up. "No! There is nothing between us!" I couldn't be bothered to argue. I changed the subject. "Come to the hospital with me tomorrow. To see Grandpa." "I have a business trip tomorrow." I looked at Pamela, long and steady. "You have to go." "Grandpa wants to see you." She pinched the bridge of her nose, said nothing, and turned and walked out. I stared at her back and slowly closed my eyes. The file said Chad's birthday was tomorrow. Pamela had already chartered a whole yacht for him. She'd even booked a fireworks crew along the Hudson River. Business trip. All of it just an excuse. Grandpa was nearly at the end, running on fumes. He'd been in care all this time, and only now was well enough to see anyone. His greatest wish was to lay eyes on his grandson's wife. But the next day, I had the flowers and the gift ready, and still no Pamela came. I gritted my teeth and decided to go on my own. When I walked into the ward, Grandpa's eyes lit up. He looked past me, behind me. "Kid, where's Pamela?" "She'll be here soon." I texted Pamela. "Just come see him once. Once is enough." "I promise I won't go after Chad again." The reply came: "Fine. Half an hour." Half an hour later, Pamela arrived. Except behind her, Chad was there too.

Grandpa and I both froze. I choked down my anger and asked Pamela under my breath, "What is this supposed to mean?" She looked at Chad. "Chad has a kind heart. He wanted to come see Grandpa too." I bit out each word. "Pamela, you'd better keep him in line." Grandpa asked her, "Who's this young man? Your secretary?" Pamela was about to speak when Chad stepped forward. "I'm a friend of Pamela's. Grandpa, how's your health? How much longer do you have to live?" "Chad." There was a warning buried in my voice. Chad stuck out his tongue. "Oops. Listen to me, running my mouth like that." "Grandpa, take a look at this." He suddenly pulled a sheet of paper from inside his jacket and handed it to Grandpa. I moved to stop him, but it was too late. Grandpa read, and read, and his breathing turned ragged, his face flushing red, his chest heaving. With everything he had left, he struck Chad, the man closest to him, across the face. "You, you—" Grandpa coughed violently, then spat out a mouthful of blood. "Grandpa!" The scream tore out of me. "Someone, help! Somebody come quick!" But Pamela shut the door and locked it. She patted Chad soothingly as he covered his face and cried. Then she turned to Grandpa, her eyes frozen over. "Grandpa, Chad came to see you out of kindness. Even if you're the elder, you hit someone, so you have to apologize." "Pamela!" Eyes red, I glared at her, teeth clenched. At her words, Grandpa's breathing grew more frantic. Then, all at once, he pitched straight over onto the bed. Pamela froze. Outside the door, the doctors and nurses were pounding to get in. I lunged and grabbed her by the collar. "Open the door, let the doctors in, Grandpa needs emergency care!" Pamela lowered her eyes. "You apologize to Chad on Grandpa's behalf." "Chad takes things hard. Who knows how many nights that slap will keep him up." My eyes went wide. "What did you just say!" "Apologize." "Never." Chad nestled against Pamela's leg and cocked an eyebrow at me. He'd done it on purpose. "Then I'll never open this door." As Pamela spoke, the heart monitor split into a shrill, screaming alarm. The line on it had already gone flat. My heart seized. "…I apologize, I apologize, all right? Chad, I'm sorry." "Pamela, save him now!" Chad grinned from ear to ear. "Mr. James, I accept your apology." Only then did Pamela open the door. A crowd of medical staff surged in and worked to save him. A minute later. Grandpa's attending physician spoke, powerless. "Mr. James, the shock was too great for Old Mr. James. His heart stopped on the spot." "There's nothing more we can do." Something detonated in my head. My mind went blank. Mechanically, I laid my hand over Grandpa's cold, stiff one. Only then did I notice he was still gripping the paper Chad had given him. I pried it loose. It was a pregnancy test report. The baby was five months along. Father: Chad Matthews. And the mother: Pamela Simmons. "Heh…" My mouth twisted into something bitter, and I couldn't tell if I was laughing or crying. I squeezed my eyes shut, hard. Then snapped them open. "Someone, tie Chad up for me." "As for Pamela… autumn's here. It's about time the skies over Simmons Corp turned cold too."
