I was the Red-Thread Fairy. On the day of the Star Festival, hurrying toward the Hall of Crimson Love, my foot slipped and I fell into the celestial pool, waking up inside the body of the useless junior disciple of the Heavenly Sword Sect.
The body's original owner had wanted to ask senior disciple Aidan Blake out for the Star Festival. But the moment she touched his sleeve, his spirit beast trampled her half to death.
"Shameless. You know I hate being touched, and by you of all people?"
Aidan waved a hand with open disgust and tossed a talisman at me.
"Fine. I'm generous enough not to hold it against you. Consider this top-grade talisman an apology for your injury."
"The betrothal between us was nothing but a joke our parents made. It was never meant to be taken seriously. Stop clinging to me."
Ugly words drifted into my ears from all around.
"A prodigy like the eldest Blake heir belongs with the second senior sister as his cultivation partner. He shouldn't be dragged down by trash like her!"
"She threw herself under his beast on purpose to get stepped on. A top-grade talisman, and he just hands it over to her for free?"
"Who still believes in parental arrangements these days? He has a top-grade heavenly spirit root. How could a useless thing like her ever deserve him?"
I gave a small flick of my hand, and red thread slowly wound around their index fingers.
Hurt people on purpose and still spout such righteous nonsense? From now on, every last one of you can take an animal for a cultivation partner.
……
Pain shot through my body, and the ugly words bored into my ears one by one.
I came back to myself and found I was being pinned under a spirit beast that looked like a black panther with golden eyes.
The man in flowing white robes standing a short distance off claimed he wouldn't hold anything against me.
Yet he made no move to call back the beast crushing me.
It hurt so much.
I pounded at the beast's huge paw with everything I had.
"Get off me, you big black lump of coal!"
Only then did Aidan Blake call his spirit beast.
"Onyx, that's enough, come here. Don't dirty your paws on trash like this."
The beast lifted its paw and padded obediently behind him.
Aidan didn't spare me a single glance.
He only raised a hand and gently stroked the beast at his back.
As if praising it for a job well done.
In that instant, the original Lauren's memories came flooding into my mind.
I understood roughly what was going on.
The original Lauren was love-obsessed, a childhood companion of Aidan Blake, and yet she had only an empty spirit root.
To keep up with him, she had poured a fortune into buying her way into the Heavenly Sword Sect.
Aidan looked down on her, deciding she wasn't good enough for him.
Trading on his title as senior disciple, he led the other disciples in bullying her.
Behind her back he spent no small amount of her spirit stones and leaned freely on her family's resources.
He took every advantage there was, and played the noble aloof man on top of it.
But the moment the betrothal came up, suddenly she wasn't good enough for him.
It left the original Lauren believing she really was worthless, forever bending over backward to please Aidan Blake.
I spat, hard.
Disgusting.
Of all things, this fairy cannot stand a man who wears righteousness like this while his heart is rotten with malice.
He was the one unworthy of the original Lauren's whole devoted heart.
On the ground, the top-grade talisman was still glinting.
I glanced down at it.
This talisman was one he'd made the original Lauren buy with her own spirit stones. That time she'd bought a hundred of them at once.
Using one of her own bought talismans to pay for her life, and wearing that magnanimous look while he did it. It was sickening.
Aidan Blake looked down at me from above.
"Lauren Flores, what are you still lying there for? Don't tell me you're trying to play the victim?"

His eyes went cold. "You know perfectly well I despise weak, helpless women like you."
"A useless thing like you should just pack your bags and leave the mountain. People like you were never meant for the sect anyway."
His little followers jumped in at once.
"Exactly! An empty-spirit-root waste like you shouldn't be holding up our senior brother!"
"He's already made plans with Senior Sister Daisy for the Star Festival! There's no way he'd ever go out with you, so give it up!"
"Do you really not know your own place? An empty spirit root like you, daring to dream about our senior brother?"
"Tsk, tsk, tsk. Go take a good long look in the mirror!"
"Our second senior sister and our senior brother are the ones made for each other!"
Even the spirit beast at Aidan Blake's side rolled its eyes at me.
Never in the Celestial Court had I suffered an insult like this.
The old Lauren Flores wouldn't have talked back, but that didn't mean I would let them trample me.
Furious, I dragged myself up off the ground.
"Aidan Blake, you spend my spirit stones, you use my family's resources, and you still dare to look down on me like this?"
"The robe you're wearing, your sword, your artifacts, which one of them did I not buy with my own spirit stones?"
"You look so upright and noble, but inside you're a hundred times more poisonous than the deadliest pill!"
Hearing all this from someone who had never once argued back, Aidan Blake froze for a moment.
When he came to, he couldn't stop his eyes from sweeping over the things he wore.
"Utter nonsense!" he snapped back, flustered.
"Everything on me I bought myself! It has nothing to do with you!"
"Your Flores family may be one of the wealthiest around, but my Blake family is no worse!"
I planted both hands on my hips. "You say you bought it yourself? Where's the proof? Where are the receipts?"
"You don't have any. But I do, every last one!"
I was almost grateful the original owner had been so lovesick.
She had kept the receipts for everything she gave Aidan Blake.
For no other reason than to see her beloved wearing the things she'd bought for him.
"Aidan!"
A figure in pink came running eagerly to Aidan Blake's side.
She looped her arm gently through his.
"Aidan, the Star Festival's limited river outing is about to open. Let's hurry over."
"They say this year's festival has limited Star Festival stardew. Drink it and your cultivation grows, and it'll make the two of us even more in tune with each other!"
Facing her, Aidan Blake's eyes turned noticeably softer.
"Daisy, this new outfit of yours is lovely today."
With Daisy Harding, he had nothing to say about hating being touched.
Daisy Harding's face flushed faintly, and she gave a soft, coy smile.
"It's because... you chose it so well."
The fellow disciples around them all praised what a fine match they made.
I cut straight through their little moment.
"Hey! Aidan Blake, we're not done here! What Star Festival date are you talking about?"
"Everything on you was paid for with my spirit stones! If you won't honor the betrothal, then strip off every single thing I bought and give it back!"
Only then did Daisy Harding notice me standing off to the side.
She looked baffled. "Junior Sister Lauren, what do you mean by this?"
"Why would Aidan take gifts from you at random? Don't go pinning false charges on him."
Aidan Blake ignored me outright.
"Daisy, there's no point arguing right and wrong with someone like her. It's a waste of time."
He flicked a finger.
A sword floated up in front of them.
Aidan Blake wrapped an arm gently around Daisy Harding's waist.
"Daisy, let's go."
Paying no attention to me at all, the two of them rode the sword away into the distance.

The other disciples started in on me with their sneers.
"Lauren Flores, the eldest Blake heir and second senior sister have gone off on their sweet little Star Festival date. Better bury that pathetic crush on him right now. You're not fit to stand near him!"
"A useless wreck like you, dreaming of the eldest Blake heir? He built his foundation in ten days. He's a genius!"
"Someone as worthless as you probably won't reach Foundation Establishment in this whole lifetime."
"Leaving the Heavenly Sword Sect is the best thing you could do now. Stop ruining their sweet Star Festival date!"
"Ha! If the Flores family weren't so wealthy, you'd never have gotten into the Heavenly Sword Sect at all!"
"If I had a family like yours, I'd have gone home to eat and lie around for the rest of my life. I sure wouldn't be chasing someone I could never have!"
Then one disciple with no sense at all made me an offer.
"Little Lauren, why not come with me instead? I'm only a step below the eldest Blake heir. I could just about let you be my concubine."
"It's the Star Festival today. Say yes to me, and I'll reward you with a top-grade clarity pill as a love-token. What do you say?"
A frivolous piece of work.
Up in the Celestial Court, no one had ever dared speak to me like this.
This Cliff Fletcher went from flower to flower, sweet-talking every naive junior sister he could find.
That top-grade clarity pill he was dangling had probably been swindled off someone else.
Cut from the same rotten cloth as Aidan Blake.
Not fit to hold a beautiful bond of love in his hands.
I gave my spiritual power the faintest little nudge.
Even after falling from the heavens, the red-thread art hadn't left me.
I tied one end of the thread around Cliff Fletcher's index finger and hooked the other end onto a sparrow in mid-flight.
Cliff Fletcher lifted his head to that sparrow and went chasing after it, shouting like a man gone mad.
"Little sparrow, you've stirred a feeling in me I've never known."
"Would you be my cultivation partner? Stay by my side forever?"
"Wait! My darling wife, fly slower~"
The sparrow, terrified, only flew faster.
The disciples around him watched, utterly baffled.
I looked around me.
One by one, I tied a red thread from each of those smug faces to whatever animal I happened to spot.
Not one of the people who had once bullied the original Lauren escaped it.
Hmph. I'm not fit for him?
The way I see it, they're a fine match for these animals!
Once I was done, I patched up my injuries as best I could and took to my sword after Aidan Blake and the others.
They needn't think they'd get away that easily.
But this original body, so busy chasing after her beloved, had barely any cultivation to show for it.
The whole way there, my sword-flight was one stumble after another.
By the time I reached the Star Festival river outing, my stomach was churning like a rolling tide.
I braced myself against a nearby tree and threw up violently.
A moment later, a snide voice reached my ears.
"Well, well~ Little Lauren really doesn't know when to quit~"
"With that kind of persistence, she'd probably succeed at anything. Pity. The one thing that won't work is chasing my Aidan."
This one just wouldn't leave anyone alone either.
In the memories,
no matter what, she always managed to find the original Lauren, and even to provoke her.
So full of scheming. A perfect match for someone like Aidan Blake.

I looked up at her, and she immediately started showing off.
"Jealous?"
"Aidan gave this to me."
Daisy turned the hairpin over in her fingers, wearing a smug little smile.
"You want to know where Aidan is right now, don't you?"
"He's off waiting in line to buy me jade celestial dew, that stuff everyone's been raving about lately. All because I said I wanted some."
What a way to stake her claim.
I rolled my eyes.
The hairpin didn't even look like anything special.
Had she forgotten? The Flores family had more of these than they knew what to do with.
I really couldn't understand why the original Lauren let a line like that get to her.
Everything the original owned was hers already. Why should a gift from anyone matter?
I pointed at the hairpin in her hand. "That's it?"
"That's all it takes to make you this happy?"
"My father sends me things by the cartload!"
Daisy clicked her tongue.
"What would you know? Aidan gave me this!"
"The things he gives can't be bought with spirit stones!"
"You're just talking tough. After all, you trailed after him for years, and he never once gave you a thing."
I made a face at her.
"Because I couldn't care less!"
"My family has everything. What could I possibly want?"
"Someone poor like you is easy to fool. One cheap little trinket and you're parading it all over the place."
Daisy's hand clenched hard around the hairpin, shaking with rage.
"You—"
"Let me tell you, so what if you've suddenly grown a sharp tongue? Aidan will never choose you!"
"Once the Star Festival's over today, Aidan is going to pick a day and formally make me his cultivation partner!"
"Oh, and what a fine thing that is." I twined a strand of hair around my finger.
"I've got no interest in chasing that piece of trash anymore. If you want to treat him like a treasure, that's your business, not mine."
"Just don't ever bring him up in front of me again. He's a stain on my whole life!"
Daisy opened her mouth to say more.
I pointed a finger, and her voice was gone.
Her mouth kept moving with no sound coming out. She clutched her throat, panic all over her face.
I called out the red thread and tied one end to her, the other to a duck out in the star-river.
Daisy's gaze snapped toward the star-river as if something had pulled it there.
The next second, she flung herself into the water with a look of pure delight.
Before long, Aidan came back carrying the jade celestial dew.
He didn't see Daisy anywhere. He saw me instead.
The first thing he did was round on me.
"Where's Daisy? What did you do to her?"
"Let me warn you, you are not to hurt her! Ten lives wouldn't be enough to pay for it if you did!"
I tilted my head and pointed at myself.
"Me?"
"I'm at the Acevedo Refining stage. You think I could take her?"
Then I turned my finger.
"Take a look over there. Isn't that your precious Daisy?"
Aidan followed the line of my finger.
The sight ahead drained the color from his face.
Only then did he notice Daisy, splashing merrily with a duck in the star-river.
